Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me out with something regarding my basement apartment.

I live in the basement of a 6-plex (6 apartments) and the windows are all crappy, wood (1940's style).

So I just wanted to know if anyone knew the laws regarding air conditioners in basement apartments, as it gets pretty hot in my apartment, I installed a window mounted air conditioner, I had to rip off the screen so that it could be installed properly.

Now are they allowed by law, is there anything concerning air conditioners in Toronto?

Just would like some help on this matter, I don't want my landlord to rip it out, or for me to get some kind of fine. It is installed properly and fastened correctly etc.

Thanks in advance,

Sean

I would start by reading your lease.

I know our municipal government has done some crazy sh!t, but AC's aren't banned here just yet. This has nothing to do with any bylaws.

as far as I know they would just say be careful with the dripping water - if it causes any damage, you're liable for it (mold)

This has to do with Building Code not By-laws... if it meets the requirement of BC u should be fine ...

he still should've asked the landlord for permission first.

whatever is in your lease is secondary to landlord-tenant law (i.e. the RTA in Ontario)...but having said that, is there anything in your lease re: a/c? do you pay your own utilities or is that included in the rent? If you pay your own utilities, I doubt your landlord will even care and the point may be moot.

city bylaw standards do prescribe for minimum and maximum temperatures, AFAIK...so while a landlord is not required to provide a/c, they are required to maintain 'habitable' units that conform to the temp. limits set by the city.

AFAIK, if it's been installed properly, you'll be fine.

I'd suggesting going here for more info to learn your rights (and obligations) under the RTA and where to go for help if necessary:
