In one of the EDC articles, the Hard promoter said something about trying to distance this Hard event from "raves" by not having artists like Deadmau5. Hah! look how that worked out for them.
Sadface
I know its easy to 2nd guess HARD's plans here, but given that they built their name throwing raves trying to do a more "indie"-flavored music fest was probably a bad idea. Non ravers will avoid their parties regardless and ravers aren't going shell out big bucks for a bunch of hipster bands and some dubstep. Learning experience I suppose.

Does anyone know how cancellations like this work out financially for talent, venue, sound/stage setup, etc? I'd think that most of the contracts would involve a good deal of upfront money so by cancelling the show they'd mainly be saving on staffing for the event itself, but I must be wrong because that wouldn't be worth cancelling the show over unless ticket sales were REALLY bad.

Security not a factor in Hard L.A. cancellation, promoter says

July 13, 2010 | 11:01 am

In deciding to merge the July event with an August concert instead, Hard Events’ Gary Richards cites extra rules and costs created in the wake of a death after the Electric Daisy Carnival.

Gary Richards, the promoter of Hard L.A., denied the cancellation was caused by the Coliseum incident but acknowledged that in the wake of Rodriguez’s death, city officials forced the producers to add “a lot of extra stipulations and requirements” that “resulted in unforeseen costs to the event.” He said his company, Hard Events, plans to go ahead with an Aug. 7 concert at the park and that some acts scheduled to appear Saturday would be shifted to the later event.

“I don't want anyone to think that this cancellation had anything to do with the events that occurred at Electric Daisy Carnival, because it didn't,” Richards said.

“We’ve been working with the city for months, and all our security plans were approved,” Richards said. “We just thought it would be better to put both events together. This didn’t have anything to do with security issues.”

read that last sentence again.... this was all about $$$, nothing more nothing less. i don't see how some extra security precautions would make an event become totally unprofitable... it must have already been questionable and they decided to pull the plug. i had seen somewhere they had sold around 12K in tix.... but the venue hold 16K so that 4,000 in non-sold tix must have been their profit margin i guess...

Venue holds 25,000 people, target was 15,000 but they only sold 12,000.

"Heading into the weekend, Valdez said Hard L.A. was on target to sell about 12,000 tickets, and the event is hoping ultimately to hit 15,000. "

i would say they expected this event to sell out... so the 10 - 13K people not going is why this is being cancelled... i think them saying they were hoping for 15K would be based on knowing how many tickets were already sold-to-date, not their hopes for the event.

Ya it seems like the party was canceled due to the lack of presales, but it was hard for me to buy it until now...

there have been a few article written this summer about tour cancellations for regular music artists...

i know the American Idol summer tour just cancelled a bunch of dates... some shows only had 2,000 people versus 10K last year.... so its not limited to EDM.... Limp Bizkit just cancelled their tour as well due to slow sales...

What ever happened after Hard's early closure in Inglewood at The Forum after the first or second DJ? Did people get refunds or did everyone get screwed?
