My latest song uses three drum loops (plus some one-shots), one of which is a VEC loop that is prominent throughout the track. I didn't try to hide it, I didn't cut it up, I didn't re-pitch it, and in fact I have it playing nearly in isolation at one point with the full realization that some producers would recognize it. To my amazement :rolleyes:, somebody did notice it and told me I should cut it up, but I don't want to and I'm not going to.
So, what is the punishment for such a travesty? Please make it quick and painful. :nervous:

I've heard your music and I feel like we're in the same boat. You do a lot of melodic and harmonic stuff, leaving the drums more to fill frequencies and establish rhythm instead of being a centerpiece that drives the track. I use loops too, the rest of the content we put around them undeniably makes up for it.

It's a little disappointing to hear, but I assume you must have come up with some really original killer melodic material to make up for the lazy drum work...

Wow - that pretty much sums up my dance tracks perfectly! Actually, I like making drum parts most of the time, but for this track, I put the loops in there as more or less a placeholder, but it worked so perfectly that I figured, hey why not? The only people who are going to notice or care are other producers, so...

It's actually more about the vocals, which are the centerpiece of the track, definitely not the drums!

i think it depends on the tune you make or at least what you want from it i just made a tune with the same loop running through it and i dont care as i wanted my attention on other elements of the track. my new tune ive started from scratch with no loops in sight ;)

Some of those Vengenance loops are pretty sick, even though they can be over processed. If the groove of the track relies on the loop...I weep for the lost art of songwriting.

I wouldn't recognize a Vengeance if it bit me on the arse, which brings up a related point - I've never understood how people can even recognize these loops. Do people sit around memorizing them? I mean, there are hundreds, if not thousands in the various VEC/VEH packs!

On a serious note, I used to hate songs made with the instant 3rd or 5th chord preset. Most of them sounded ultra cheep, like not a whole lot of effort that went into making them. For a long time, I refused to use such presets. Then, last year, I made a song using both a 3rd and a 7th chord synth preset (although heavily edited) in Dimension. It was like a light went on with this realization that I'm good enough that I don't have to pretend to be good by not using 'cheating' tools, anymore. I just have to use them in a way which is a reflection of my ability.

Yeah I agree. As far as I'm concerned using loops is completely harmless if you don't rely on them in any way. I could create my own percussion lines but acquiring the one-shots and putting them together would take a lot longer than the loops I have on hand, and the end result of my tracks would be largely the same since I never draw attention to my percussion anyway.
I'm sure some purists might shun me for that but them, I'm not sacrificing any artistic integrity by using loops as convenient placeholders for something I don't deem important in my music to begin with. And neither is Cryo. Though props to him for usually making his own rhythm tracks, I can honestly say I don't have that kind of initiative.
