NEW YORK - New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has died of a reported heart attack.
A person close to Steinbrenner confirmed his death to The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet made the announcement.
He turned 80 on July 4.
The Tampa Tribune says emergency crews responded to Steinbrenner's home in Tampa on Monday night.
WABC in New York says Steinbrenner was rushed to St. Joseph's hospital in Tampa.
The Yankees have earned 11 pennants and seven World Series titles under Steinbrenner. He has owned the club since 1973.
Steinbrenner's sons Hal and Hank assumed day-to-day control of the team in 2007. |

Aw great... he and Billy Martin will rejoin for an eternity of arguing.

| I was at the dentist when the news came out... one minute the anchor was like he suffered a massive heart attack and is intensive care and 2 mins later... he's dead :nervous: |

He was a controversial owner who changed the face of major sports. Thats as far as I'll say in respect to his memory and his passing ... RIP. He proved that if you throw a lot of money at something, it will eventually give results.
New era in New York begins next year. I doubt his sons will throw money like their father did. Give other teams a fair chance to compete and develop, and win. |
