The story behind my tattoo:
At the tail end of 1999, I found myself booked for my first overseas gig, a 10-day trip (that turned into a 2-month stay) to the Philippines to play at the launch party in Manila for the movie Human Traffic. The promoters were crazy-generous like I'd never experienced before, hooking me up with a sweet pad to stay in, sponsor coupons for shoes and such, and a gift that had been offered to all of them, but that none of them wanted - a free tattoo courtesy of their friend Alfred, who was one of Manila's first modern-needle artists and who had been practicing his craft for nearly 3 decades. Alfred had been setting up booths at their raves from the mid to late-1990s, offering henna and temporary tattoos and setting up appointments for his shop. In return, he offered a free tattoo to any member of the Groove Nation team who wanted one. None of them did, and I'd been jonesing to add to the two I already have, so it didn't take much to get a "yes" out of me. I knew I wanted some sort of representation of my craft (I've been DJing since the mid-80s up til the present), the only problem was, I didn't have very much time to come up with a design.
The day I arrived, they also surprised me by announcing that I'd be heading over to the resort island of Boracay to play on New Year's Eve. Boracay is a little gem in Visayas, about 300 km south of Manila, only 7 k.m. long, with amazingly laid-back and friendly islanders, white sand like talc, gorgeous sunsets and a main strip of over 100 hotels, restaurants and clubs (that number's close to tripled these days). I had fun hanging around with the crew that came over with me, but eventually found myself just spending time alone, relaxing and shaking off the edginess of the city (both Toronto and Manila). One night, I was at Summerplace, the club I was booked to play at, when the proverbial lightbulb came on. I sketched out the initial design on a tiny scrap of paper and kept it with me until I made it back to Manila.
It took 3 x 3 hour sessions to finish the piece, and I still remember Alfred's home-studio like it was yesterday. Third floor of his apartment, 30C weather, his 4 year-old daughter bringing me glasses of water and standing there watching over me with a concerned look as her dad etched away on my spine. The sessions brought up a lot of emotional dreck for me and were quite draining - part of me realised that this was in part a way for me to reclaim my body after having suffered many years of physical abuse at the hands of my stepfather - and Alfred's wife would feed me dinner at the end to help replenish my sapped energy. Certainly one of the more memorable experiences of my life.

Admittedly, it's a crude design, but I wouldn't trade it in for anything else. It's highly personal and music lovers who "get it" always tell me how much they dig it. In case you can't figure it out, there's vinyl in the middle, tonearms to either side, and waves of bass bubbling up from the bottom.
So that's the story behind that particular piece. What's the story behind yours, Bas? I take it you like record players? ;) |

You know, that's an awesome story and I'm sorry I've made fun of your tattoo. It means a lot to you and you clearly went through a lot to get it. And yes I do like record players, or as kids today call them "turntables" (aptly named because the platter "turns" or spins to play a record). Like you I wanted a way to always remember a part of my life that means so much to me, and has for the past 15 or so years, what better way than having it permanently inked onto my skin?
