Progressive track "Black circus"

Hello every one I am new to this forum.
I came up with this track I call Black Circus, its' not mastered and the sound quality in Soundcloud is distorted for some reason. Any way I was curious what your opinions were. I'm trying to learn and get better at production so any critique or comments would be greatly appreciated.

(Do you guys think this track needs more work in terms of creativity or should I just concentrate on the sound quality part from hear?)

SoundCloud streams are 128 kbps, which might explain any sound issues.

As for the track, there's not much more than a beat, bassline and a couple of other sounds playing. It sounds like you've got two different beats going on: One good with the bassline playing, and one with too loud shuffled shakers with no bassline. I personally like the beat with the bassline the most.

You could add some twisted melodies, and perhaps a few dark eerie background effects and subtle pads to bring out the concept of the title better. The listener should be immersed in this black circus of yours :) I hope this was of help; just ask if something is unclear.

Soundcloud streams are only 128kbps *when embedded*. If you go to the site and hear tune then you're hearing the exact quality the person has uploaded.

In order for users to hear music rapidly on the SC platform, we re-encode every track to high quality 128 kbps Mp3s. However, if you make your file « downloadable », then the users who have access to it will be able to download the original file (whether it’s Aiff, Wav or Mp3).

I would imagine streaming full .wav files for example would be too demanding on both the SC server and the user's internet connection. You can *download* the file in the original quality though. At least that's how I understand it.

A quick google search proves your point. Admin states:

"hi, we re-encode all tracks in 128kbs for streaming on the web. this is done to gain performance for the streams. so yes, the sound quality of the streams is degraded. but we use the best possible mp3 encoding algoritms so the quality should be far better than e.g. myspace.

in the future we might consider to stream in 320kbs mp3 or (more likely) 128-256kbs AAC. this should improve the sound quality to be almost on par with CD. but as of now we're using 128kbs mp3 as it is a good trade-off between quality/performance (and also since AAC streaming is only available since the flash 9 moviestar release, which has about 90% penetration as of now, we need it to be ~95 before we move)."

Yeah that makes sense that having a track go from Wav to 320kbs then to 128kbs would distort the sound quality. Especially if the track is not mastered. I'll have to keep that in mind next time.
Well thanks for the feedback. I will definitely take it into consideration.

Posting some comments on SC. Sorry I didn't earlier.

The bottom end sounds quite muddy, messy and bland to me. It needs some focus and punch - perhaps try to give the bassline some mid frequencies.

You have some ok ideas with that running techno-like percussion, but it seems a bit too stale and lacks groove. Also some of the sounds could use some HP filtering in my opinion.

Good luck with it :)

i just heard your track, and the first thing y heard its that
no melos, no pads , only in the bridge but..... didnt like it =/

Ok thanks for all the feedback everyone.
I think I am going to take a break from this track since Ive heard it way too much. Maybe later when I find better pads, strings, and such, I will come back to it. Or hell, I might just can the project all together. Not sure if its even worth it. Either way it was good practice. I appreciate all your honesty.
