hi West Coast TA... i'm wondering if some of you can recommend a still picture camera that can capture HD Video with good sound for recording EDM events. Some cameras record sound from loudspeaker very well, also videos at night looks great! Thanks ahead of time for the input!

What's your budget?

DSLR or compact?
sheffy
I actually just went through this a few weeks ago and had some decent discussion with TA's on this forum.

I wanted something cheap ($200-300) with good audio.

Ultimately I bought the Panasonic Lumix ZR3 because it was barely over $200, very compact, does 720 HD video, stills up to some ridiculous resolution like 4600xSomething, and most importantly captures BASS from clubs without too much distortion.

Here are some examples taken from Ruby Skye in San Francisco. It's a pretty dark club, so the lighting in the videos isn't fantastic, but it takes very acceptable videos when what you're shooting is lit up. ;)

Thanks Sheffy, this camera looks good. Definitely worth checking out.

For compact stuff, yeah, I'd recommend the Panasonic Lumix stuff with Leica lenses. They tend to have the best image quality. I can't really comment on the sound quality though, sorry.

Im actually looking for a replacement one too. I like the one Andrieux has, and the vid quality and sound that sheffy put up on the one he got.

The problem with the ones I have aside from the sony ones that capture decent sound is the audio capture. Any one else recommend any with decent sound capturing?
Nerologic
wow the sound quality is pretty ing good sheffy.

did you have the mic hole convered up a little or that's how it records?

i love my 4 to death, but the sound sometimes is on it :/
sheffy
Nope, no mic covering. That's essentially right out of the box without fiddling with the settings. I have been pretty impressed, too.

Here's an example of what happens when you cover the mic. My buddy grabbed my camera to record a video during "On A Metropolis Day" and was sadly unaware of where the mic is placed on the camera.

Note, the lights come on near the end of the video if you want a better idea of what the videos look like when the club isn't super dark.

Size-wise, the camera fits nicely on my palm without extending over my wrist or fingers.

I have the same camera as sheffy. I haven't had a problem with the audio until I went to EDC. I think it just got too loud on the field and clipped the mic so the sound went out until it readjusted, but I haven't had it happen in clubs though.

Sound cutting out on Armin @ EDC

Armin @ EDC (mic surviving ;)

Sasha @ EDC

James Zabiela @ EDC

Markus Schulz @ Avalon

Ferry Corsten @ The Palladium

You will need a memory card. The 8G card is $21. The 16G is $39. I bought the 16G card and haven't come close to filling it up in a couple outings.
