Anyone else in a production slump?

I have made about two and a half minutes of music in the last year or so. I open up my sequencers and play around with synths and samples and melodies but nothing ever seems to click, so I rarely save any of it. I listen to my old tracks and try to figure out what was different back then that inspired me to make those. I take weeks off from trying to make anything, to see if a break might get my creative mind back in gear. I try listening to old favorites, and looking for new music. But nothing seems to work.
Let this be a commiseration thread for all of us who are in a big slump. |

Could your troubles reflect what's going on in your outside life? Just a hunch, but I think if you get out and make some REAL changes to your every day life, forget about music and production, just change things up whatever it takes. Do some things you've never done but always wanted to, or you've been too scared to, or whatever. Do something unexpected, spontaneous. You might just come back in a few months feeling inspired.
The worst that can happen is you don't, but you'll still likely feel better off :gsmile:
Hope you feel better soon bud  |

The only thing u can do is continue making music until you hit something good which will bring your confidence back.
I reach production slumps from time to time, but i always get out of it eventually. Most often i get into a slump cause i want my track to be on the level of my favorite producers.
Sometimes you may need to cheat a little, find loops, presets etc which can get ur inspiration back. |

i don't think anyone is really immune from slumps and it sucks to experience one, but i find the best thing to do in that situation is to look into a new technique (or many) from tutorials etc or anything to disrupt my usual workflow like call up a friend and work with them on a track, remix or re-edit a published track, practice dj'ing, work on a piece in a different genre etc... |

Remix something. It's what I always do whenever I can't come up with a decent melody to run with. It doesn't even have to be a full blown remix, just make a phrase of the build-up or something. Just keep your mind active because if you keep conditioning yourself into opening the program and being disappointed every time you're eventually just not going to care anymore. |

...or try doing a cover. Find a track you really like and try to recreate it - it's a good way to force yourself to learn new techniques and it keeps your ears sharp. |

To dovetail into this, you sound a little bored. I think you have talent but you're not pushing your own envelope. Find a track that you think you'd have a hard time recreating AND making it listenable and challenge yourself to do just that. One of the best things I ever did for myself was to attempt my recreation of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and I kind of did that on a dare, from you.
You seem like the type of person who's bored if he's not learning something. Put yourself in a corner where you're forced to learn to get out of it. I will almost guarantee you that it will cure your block and that you'll get about 10 times out of it, what you put into it.
As a matter of fact, I dare you :p |

happens to the best of us..i been in one for a bit now but i'm kind of out of it but my main concern now is time..it's hard working 50+ hours a week, doing my monthly radio show, gigs, partying and finding time to make music. when i was in college, was so much easier to find time, nowadays, not so much :( |

I've just entered a slump, both in production and DJing...But I have an awesome mashup idea that I am working on, so I'm not completely dead in the water...
These slumps are getting worse, I could crank out a couple decent tracks in a week then sit around and have nothing to do. Having deadlines helps a lot for me, I think. Do a remix contest or something. |
