Then why is long hair still commonly sported by manly men in other Christian countries such as Spain or Italy?

I can't believe I'm going to give a serious reply to you but here goes...

The conventional image of Jesus in European cultures dates back to the seventh century and reflects more the qualities thought desirable at that time then the acutal Jesus. For the preceeding 3 centuries Jesus was generally portrayed as a young beardless Roman looking man, in keeping with the depictions of the heros in Roman mythology. Prior to that he was generally portayed as a semitic looking man with short dark curly hair and a beard. The gospels don't really contain any physical description of Jesus; however, since he is described as being completely ordinary in appearance one would presume that he would have appeared like most Galilieans of his time; olive skin, beard, short black curly hair.

As for Paul; long hair would have been considered shameful for jews at the time of Jesus and this would have likely continued for early christians. It is less likely that what Paul is saying is inconsistant with how Jesus appeared then it is that the conventional image of Jesus is inconsistant with how Jesus appeared.
