it's on ok track but it indeed didn't deserve all the fuss when it was released, it's not that great.

And it's not a classic, for now it's just a popular track.

Just found this, pretty neat little track Joel was messing around with.. he has the potential to make epic stuff, but he's stuck up on making tracks that'll make him rich.

I hope you weren't calling this epic stuff...

Joel could put out a track of fart noises and his adoring fans would buy it and call it the most epic tune ever.
srussell0018

he already did
sucanushie
I wounder if deadmau5 would get pissed about someone smoking weed when this was taken...

For better or for worse (imo for worse, but whatever), Deadmau5 has had a huge impact on music in the last few years. That doesn't make his stuff classic, however.

Also, I think it takes some time for a track to become a classic... You don't "make" a song a classic, it just becomes it over time [usually after appearing on 10 Gatecrasher compilations].

I'm sure judging by my registration date you know the answer to that. I played both those out back in the day.. got the platypus vinyl back in 96. I've never played Faxing Berlin but it was one of the biggest impacting tracks in that style of the year hands down and one of the tracks that landed joel where he did. It was a monster club/festival track and will def be remembered. Whether or not anyone in this thread likes it changes nothing.

Strobe was killer too and an epic track. I really wonder how much time the majority of haters spend in good clubs at good shows or festivals vs amount of time spent on the computer talking about how much stuff sucks. That "some chords" track certainly was e though.

and yep this thread has changed direction but it's not as if any of this justifies a new thread let alone continuing on much more lol.

deadmau5 all the way. who the hell is this rusko idiot? better yet, who decided to compare the two in the first place.

I spend much more time on the computer listening to music and talking about how much stuff sucks than I do at good clubs and shows. And I don't often talk about how much stuff sucks.

Does this really have anything to do with the discussion on the validity of Faxing Berlin as a classic? The Anthem was probably played just as much and KILLED at clubs and festivals. I'm really not saying Faxing Berlin isn't a classic here, because for that we would first have to clarify the definition of a classic. I just don't think your arguments work.

It sounds a little like "it's great in a club!". I thought we shot that down a long time ago.

yup. I'm not going trance nerd nerd route ala Two full moons & a trout, or Twilo Thunder.. there are classics still being made. You can say he's an ass or that you hate all his music, but to debate the impact some of his tracks have made is quite a stretch. If you search the net how many places can you find tutorials on how to make that sound and people wanting to know how to recreate it?

Well i could agree on that part that classics still being made but Faxing Berlin is not a classic, it's not even mediocre at best.

Only by trance DJs. And I doubt it had much influence on other producers. The argument is that Faxing Berlin was a classic in the sense it became popular outside its native scene, and the sound it popularised has become ubiquitous. For me, that's a better definition of "classic" than the one used by most TAs, which is "An old track that I really like".

I don't think anyone shot it down. It's often taken as wrong by default, but I'm unconvinced. There are definitely records that I've heard come to life on a club system, that don't sound the same elsewhere. And despite the claim "But everything sounds better on a club system", some records sound as you'd expect them to, but some really take on another dimension. And some actually sound worse.

The problem with the argument is not that everything sounds better in a club, but that most people never say why it sounds so good in a club.

Even if Faxing Berlin was a classic, which I don't personally think it is, it still doesn't make up for the other 99% of the songs that he puts out. IMO Strobe is the only song he's put out that could even come close to having the potential to become a classic.

That being said, I also think standing the test of time definitely plays a part in what is called a "classic." I don't think something that came out in 2007 could really be called a classic.

As far as the number of people trying to copy the sound, or the effect that it has on that particular genre, I don't think the former has much to do with it. I'm sure many people are trying to duplicate sounds that David Guetta uses, and I certainly wouldn't call anything he produces a classic. In terms of the effect on the genre, I think this track produced more of a change in the direction of Joel's career as opposed to the direction of the Progressive House (or whatever you want to call it) genre.
