Technology is making it easier and easier for people to produce tracks. Almost anyone can produce a track and put it on the internet to be downloaded by millions. People who have absolutely no musical background but are good with a computer can produce a track. Makes sense. That'd also make me wary of listening to names I've never heard before, out of fear that it's just one of those people flooding the internet with garbage.
Regardless, sifting through new artists/tracks is really the only way to find good new sounds, so I guess we're stuck doing that. :(

At the same time, new technology can mean new sounds/new techniques that didn't used to be possible. I'd say most of the people who just flood the internet with similar sounding tracks don't know how to utilize some of the more advanced effects and techniques, so I guess that's a good part of it.

I don't think it has much to do with advanced techniques. Either you have some uniqueness to your musical vision, or you don't. A good number of young producers are content to copy their favorite artists as closely as they can without actually getting into copyright infringement territory. See this thread for some evidence:
There have always been unoriginal hacks, it's just that the Internet gives them an easier way to spread their works. On the other hand, it lets gifted amateurs or those with less marketable styles spread their works, too.

Yeah the line ups at the massives are the same all the time, but we still have them and people from all over come to MTL to take part in them...
What's wrong with Circus? I'd go to Stereo 9 times out of 10, but you can't deny that they bring some quality DJs to Montreal.
I'll agree with you, Piknic's schedule is weak this year, but I try to go whenever it's nice and enjoy whoever's on deck. I'm looking forward to Carlo Lio on september 5th.

I think this a pretty good point actually. Seems to me that many aspiring DJs today think that the only way to be successful is to produce or remix your own tracks and technology has been the catalyst. Thus the market is flooded with poorly made music and DJs that don't bother with proper set construction or dig for the real undiscovered gems as they now prefer to peddle their own crap. I don't really think there's many producers that make good DJs and vice versa. Should focus and put your efforts into one or the other. Just my opinion though.
