ASIO4ALL in FL Studio mutes all sound outside of FL

I've set up FL Studio again for the first time in years and I'm using ASIO4ALL v2 in the audio settings. On the ASIO panel, under WDM Device List it shows 'VIA High Definition Audio' which I presume is my laptops primary sound card. Under that there is an 'In' and an 'Out' option which are both green, i.e. enabled. However, when the 'Out' is enabled it turns off the sound to the rest of my laptop, and if I want to listen to music, watch video tutorials etc. the only way I can do so with sound is to go into the settings and disable the 'Out', then re-enable it to continue producing.
I'm sure it's something simple but can somebody explain why this is happening?
Thanks,

A similar thing happened to me back when I used FL except the problem was that I could hear audio outside of it. IIRC, it has to with your "Output Buffer Size" (or so Ableton calls it), or, the amount of output latency you're working with. More output latency will allow you to hear things outside of FL, and the opposite is true with less output latency.
I'm not 100% sure on this but there is, of course, no harm in trying it yourself. About 2048 samples (a bit much but you did say you were working on a laptop) should be enough to allow you to hear audio outside of FL while still keeping the latency relatively unnoticeable. |

Thanks floyd,
I have tried what you suggested but no luck. The weird thing is, when the 'Out' is enabled and I try and play a track in foobar2000 (desktop music player) it doesn't even start to play. I click play, the play button changes to a pause symbol but the time elapsed stays on 00:00 and the EQ freezes on the first possible chance. Then when I disable 'Out' in FL Studio in the ASIO panel it works fine.
This is really confusing me, thanks for your initial suggest but have you any further idea what might be happening? |

sounds like some buggy software or drivers to me best thing to do is now this will be a bugger uninstall all all audio software and audio drivers-if you dont have the audio drivers then skip this bit and run system restore. And start from scratch by reinstalling drivers and software bit by bit you can find the issue.
remember when fl is installed select primary sound device ie sound card and where it says directly underneath -polling- 32 bit buffer- ect deselect them as they can sometime interfere with soundcards/drivers and take it from there good luck |

Thanks owien, but I have managed to solve the problem. It was simple, in order to use ASIO the app using it (FL Studio) must have complete control over the audio device. What that means, is you can't have FL playing a song and then have Winamp playing. However, there's a radio button in audio settings of FL that says "Auto close device" which will free the audio device if FL is minimised, or otherwise not in focus.
Thanks all for your help, and here is the thread where I found my solution. It has other solutions which may work if you're experiencing this problem.

This is actually not really a bug it is in fact really logical. But I think none of you really realizes what ASIO actually is and does. In the past there has Always been a problem with sound cards and music production. And that is latency. (hopefully we all know what that is) Steinberg solved this problem by inventing ASIO. Because the biggest cause of Latency is the fact that sound first is being processed by windows and goes through the windows mixer before it reaches your speakers. ASIO Basically solves this problem by going around it!!!!! So instead of going through the windows stuff in to the windows mixer it goes straight from the source to your speakers. Now when you know this fact about ASIO it isn't strange that your normal windows mixer is normally operational. Because Asio has switched that of for two reasons 1. The most Obvious reason you are not using it. (well that is what ASIO Assumes because why else would you engage ASIO in the first place?) The Second reason. AND THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! It does it to protect your computers. Because you should really look at ASIO as more of a independend different sound card. Because the program is designed to be totally independent from windows. Now if we think logical, what can happen if windows gets confused because it realizes that there are actually two soundcards working at the same time and gets confused which one to use? It crashes. And I am not talking about your mouse cursor freezing for a second no I am talking about Blue screen of death and your computer switches of and reboots asking you if you want it to be in save mode because your computer has suffered a major Trauma. To save you from this ASIO Switches of the windows mixer to prevent windows from getting confused about using two sound cards.
With my previous computer I actually experienced blue screens a lot because I used windows mixer and ASIO together all the time. But never knew that my computer crashed every time because of it. (that is why I studied all this boring information) For some kind of reason after having another computer I don't experience these problems any more and I am able to use the windows mixer and ASIO together with out any problems. (Probably because I have different onboard soundcard then before or something like that)
THat is why I have to warn you all. Especially those with a extra external sound card. USING ASIO AND THE WINDOWS MIXER TOGETHER IS AT YOUR OWN RISK!! Because it is not a bug that your windows sound is not working! It is a safety measure. Usually you can choose to select not only ASIO but also your normal soundcard output (what windows normally uses) in your music DAW/Host. My advice to you all is to switch that on when you want to watch youtube tutorials and produce at the same time. And only engage ASIO when it is important to have no latency. (like playing on your keyboard like it was designed for in the first place)
Its a long story. But if have taken time to read it. You have actually learned something ;) |

Yep Rjen has it right.
Unfortunately if you want low latency sound in Windows be prepared to sacrifice one of your audio interfaces to it 100% while active. |
