I started watching Whale Wars last year and it's one of my favorite shows now. I'm really looking forward to Paul Watson's speech on Saturday! Not complaining about the required donation either since it goes to a good cause :)

I watch this show every week, but it puts me into dilemma. On one hand i believe whale killings have to stop. There is no reseason whatsoever to kill whales in the name of "research."
On the other hand, the Sea Shepard uses terroristic tactics to get their point across. They are proud of the ships they have sunk/rammed.
I see their tactics being no different then pirates in Somalia. Both have demand ransoms. One wants money, the other wants to force the Japanese to stop killing whales.
The "non-toxic" bottles that they toss that are are still dangerous when thrown, it seems to be placed in glass bottles.
I just hate when they claim that they are always the victims (on that note, the whalers looked as if they intentional rammed into the Ady Gil.)
I admire the determination of each member in the Sea Shepard Organization. They do what others will not. That does not mean it is legal. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate between terrorist and vigilante.
Torin
I'll be there.
In regards to everyone's opinions...
Direct action is not for everybody. Yes, they use questionable tactics to get the point across but this is just a necessary evil that is required. Most won't understand unless you feel strongly about the cause you believe in.
Greenpeace is just a bunch of lazy hippies that hardly ever accomplish anything for this planet except fatten the pockets of the "non-profit" administrators. Sea Shepherd on the other hand are marketing and direct action geniuses. They have done more to promote awareness than any organization. With the Whale Wars show and media worthy incidents caused while at sea, the world can't help but notice. That alone is far more powerful than the actual actions to the Japanese whaler fleet.
If I have to be called a "terrorist" because I support direct action, I will gladly take the badge of "eco-terrorist".
Oh yeah, and I hardly think a possible cut from a glass bottle is the same as murdering one of the world's most majestic creatures. I'm sure they have band-aids on the boat.

Oh i support Direct Action when it is needed. I also understand that I can consider a person a terrorist while another can consider a person who kills foreign soldiers a patriot or freedom fighter.
I understand that completely. I can appreciate the will of the people who fight for whatever cause they believe in. They do what many others won't. All i am saying is that those people should take responsibility for their actions. It seems when it comes to Sea Shepard that they are ALWAYS the victim, even when they are at fault. It is that fact alone that whenever i watch Whale Wars, for some reason i keep rooting for the Japaneses Whalers. I think this is the only time where I am rooting for the greater of two evils.
Torin
I think everybody on the boat knows they have to take responsibility for their actions but I do see what you mean. A lot of it is from the way the show is cut as well. You have to remember that they will use any tactic to draw attention to the matter. If that means "playing" the victim to get more publicity, so be it. They know they're on camera and trust me when I say that everyone on that vessel thinks much more about the big picture than what the they look like as individuals.

I haven't got the sense that Sea Shepherds are proud of ramming ships, and maybe I'm naive but they didn't even seem to do it on purpose when I saw the incidents on Whale Wars. Just bad decisions/tactics gone awry IMO. Their tactics are definitely pretty aggressive but whales have no tactics of their own to defend themselves so I'm glad somebody does. It's really frustrating there are no conventional methods to put Japan in check. They even got away with attempted murder when the Japanese whaling ship deliberately ran over the tiny Ady Gil vessel. How the hell does somebody get off the hook (no pun intended) just by refusing to co-operate with the officials investigating the incident??
Btw, Sea Shepherds don't use butyric acid bottles anymore because they got tired of the Japanese propaganda accusing them of using real acid which they obviously didn't use.
I'll take an eco-terrorist badge! :tongue2
Oh yeah, The Crystal Method is playing! What an awesome combo of art and music :D

I love whales but I still think the Sea Shepherds are a bunch of cocks. I'm fine with flinging bottles of stench and stuff but I'm not down AT ALL with their manufactured drama. The captain faking getting shot was pathetic and embarrassing, and video from the Japanese ship clearly shows they drove the Ady Gil into the bow of the whaling ship to drum up an "incident".
Watch the wake of the Ady Gil go from nonexistent to frothing right before they get hit. They're not driving in reverse...
Torin
What you don't see in this video is the Japanese ship doing a sharp starboard turn towards the ady gil. Notice the ship at the beginning of the video deliberately out of frame so as not to judge the orientation of the Japanese ship. Anybody at the helm of the ady gil would give it gas if a huge ship was coming right at you. You can't turn a boat without power.
Torin
Perhaps you should watch the end of this my friend.
Sadface
I hadn't seen that video yet so thanks. I dunno, I don't think it looks like they were necessarily going to get hit in that video either, just that the boat was coming excessively close. The fact that they cut before the actual impact doesn't help their case much given that the last 2 seconds are the most important part. All this shows is that it doesn't look like the sea shepherds were planning to do anything.
It could very easily have been driver error, but its hard to argue with the fact that the ady gil moved forward before the impact. Given that it barely got the front of it clipped, the few meters of forward movement could easily have made the difference between a (very) near miss and a destructive collision. Besides, can't most boats go in reverse?
There's no question that the japanese went too close to the Ady Gil but I'm still not convinced they were going to ram them. Given the Sea Shepherds propensity for faking incidents with the japanese (see: "getting shot"), I'm more willing to give the japanese the benefit of the doubt here. As ed up as what they're doing is, they have all the incentive in the world to NOT do stupid like ram hippies.
Torin
You have some good points. Faking getting shot is just retarded...BUT see my earlier post about media genius. In this case, I truly believe they did not intentionally get hit. I'll speak to Laurens tomorrow and get some more info but the entire crew was on top of the vessel and dead in the water as they had very little fuel and were idling while waiting for the Steve Irwin to re-fuel them.
Try this video. You'll clearly see the Japanese ship turning for them.
