I've seen Harmless and Sytrus being discussed here as decent...Can anyone vouch for them?

Sytrus I'd recommend. I don't know what kind of synths you're used to, but for me Sytrus has done anything I've wanted as long as I knew what I wanted out of it.

I'm used to Komplete 5 (FM8 and Massive mostly)...

Sytrus is pretty decent but oh so complicated to programme. Lots of useful sounds though. I've also tried Poizone which is great for trancey sounds and Toxic Biohazard which is an FM/subtractive hybrid with a load of good sounds on it too.

Also worth looking at is Vocodex, the best software vocoder ever made ;) (under the caveat that i've not used the (hugely more expensive) Eiosis one yet)

Sytrus can be a little complicated to start with, but that's what I started with and have conquered it pretty well imo. I've tried Vanguard and it felt like one of those funny "trance making machines" people post pics of. And lol'd at the "Trancegate" in Vanguard, hahah.

Check out a few tutorials for Sytrus from YouTube, I'm sure tutorials combined with close inspection of the presets will get you on your way in no time.

I suppose I'll be the first to mention Harmless then. Well, I suppose it could certainly be worth $50, when I bought it I paid $9. It's not exactly your every day subtractive synth, according to Image-Line, it's an "additive synthesizer dedicated to subtractive synthesis". It's a pretty cool synth and unlike Sytrus, extremely easy to program. The nice thing about it being add/subtractive is that you can really get a much wider variety of sounds then you could with just plain subtractive.

It's great for what it is, with few negatives. The worst I could say about it is that the oscillator doesn't include a normal selection of subtractive waveforms. There is no sine or triangle, but there are about 8 different types of saws. I was a bit disappointed about that but in the end, it's still a nice synth not only for it's ability to create a wide array of sounds, but for it's simplicity as well. I mean, it's really simple.

Same here - definitely worth $9! Maybe worth $50 as well, if someone didn't want to splurge on Alchemy for additive, but it would probably have a hard time competing with something like discoDSP's Vertigo, which you could buy for around $20 more (with one of George's ever-present 30% off coupons at KVR). I honestly haven't used it much though and it's only made its way into one track thus far. But, yeah, it sure is simple and very easy to get nice usable sounds from it.

That's not too surprising for a synth that focuses on additive synthesis - you really want waveforms rich in harmonics to get the most out of it.

Grossbeat is fantastic

Maximus is a no brainer here. No-brainer.
