And I do mean disect the mix into all it's little problems. I've not touched this for a couple of months (time) and now i've come back to finish it off I think the kick is flabby and the mix is noisy.
I've got a load of new gear coming at the weekend (monitors included) so I want to approach it with a fresh perspective.
This is a slightly updated version from the one on my Soundcloud :-

edit - I should mention the end isn't the real end. There's still a minute or two of breakdown to add on. |

Typing as I listen and in super critical mode in view of your specific request;
I think it needs to pump a lot lot more. The kick sounds separate from the rest and doesn't interact with the synths. Clap could be better. Rolling bass is ok - but I would think the one used in that recent FM tut by sean tyas and put through a mangler like the ohmforce would make it a lot better (you could get a similar result with synths phasers and filters mind). I'd strongly recommend you listen to that tut for the roller he uses - it gave me a jolt actually - only saw it last night.
Anways, your'e a better man than I, I cannot compete with some of those anjuna forum youngsters in this style so I don't even try - for now.......

Cheers Rich
I completely agree about the kick, I listened to this again today to make some mental notes and thought 'what was I thinking' lol.
I'll take a peek at that tute tonight too although I suspect I've watched it already.
This maybe a faders to zero jobby
And as far as competing with the youngsters my trick is simple. Every morning when I get up I say to myself 'forget you're 39 next week, forget you're 39 next week.... ;) |

Hi G. I'm on it like sixth time and need more time to break through this/your idea for this track.

I absolutely loved it, it's hard for me to tear it apart in terms of mixing since that's seemingly my #1 problem right now.
Keep it up man, s hot ;D |

Damn it G. can't help my self - I simply love this track and for that reason I can't see a lot of negative/imperfect elements in it.
If I can suggest anything is to bring your bass line more up front (0:28 to get more punch/energy in this track). Kick is OK with me - maybe very a bit (check our Frozen Aura 0:40-0:42 - this is what I would love to hear)
You can also focus more on the automation, particularly in first build up part of your track, with some pads sound start to play flat and slowly opening up cutoff on it to brightening this sound - will add more action/attraction to this gorgeous melo.
This whole build up is brilliant, progression awesome and your break is unbelievably good and I don't really care if you like my opinion or not (this is not for sale lol).
Very Impressive Geoff - hope you will release this track man.

Kick is really boring IMO, you need a way bigger one. Also layer that mid bass and add a sub, compress.
nice vocal touches, nice melodies. |

The drums really suck the life out of this track. (Non-rip version: Drums need more variation in their rhythm. They sound way too static and don't have enough groove. I'm imagining that they're place-holders for a better rhythm section.)
Too many notes. (Non-rip version: There is no such thing as too many notes. I actually really love the musical complexity.)
I don't particularly like the white noise. (Non-rip version: Maybe tone the white-noise sweeps down a little as they kind of over-shaddow the lovely music.)
Nice job, otherwise. (Non-rip version: Actually, I'm looking forward to the finished product. Keep up the good work.) |

Def. agree with everyone else on the rhythm it needs more variation. Maybe a diff sample for the kick.
Needa pull up the leads more they sound like they could be awesome but are pretty badly covered up.
And gotta tweak the compression around and get that OOMF. |

You're a hard man to displease sometimes ;)
That pad idea in the initial buildup is pretty good. I'll definately have a play and see if I can fit that in!
This track was actually picked up by potentially two labels, both of whom wanted a tweak to the mix understandably. They also both wanted too many changes (one even wanted the brak to have the vocal parts removed!!) so I just said no. I'm quite happy just giving it all away to whoever wants it :)
Thanks for teh feedback D man!

Agreed. Can't say much more than that. Thanks!

You have spotted well. Variation in percussion is my teh weakest link I think. I also appreciate the against instinct ripping :p
But if you think i'm gonna start using less notes you've got another thing coming :D
Thanks man

Once again agreed.
This is definately a faders to zero remix once i've found the right kick.
Luckily i'll have to redo the compression as well because i'm using the Powercore for compression duties on this one and i've just sold it!
Thanks for the comments! :) |

Alright, my ears weren't designed to nitpick technical problems, so here are my thoughts on the tune as a whole:
Great samples and pluckey synths. I would like to hear you incorporate some organic sample throughout the track alongside the drums. That robotic sample would sound awesome chopped and played with the drums!
As for the drums themselves, I really don't dig them. I've never been a fan of rigid patterns like these, though.
That synth you bring in towards the very end is quite tasty indeed. You should have more of it!
The pads in the breakdown are a bit basic and overused. You probably expected me to say this, as I am a hard man to please when it comes to atmospherics. You could try automating a couple more pads on top to really let things flow.
Post up the rest when you've finished. |
