Haha... true. That would never happen today. You'd have the unions dictating that the person who washed the plane's exterior can't be the same person who polishes it... that the person who vacuums after hours can't be the same person who takes out the trash... that 30 hour work weeks are mandatory with double pay if that time is exceeded, plus 90 minute lunch breaks.
Thats ing retarded. Labor unions before the war were just as vocal, if not more so, as they are today.
The reason we do not have this need to mobilize now is because of technology, specifically nuclear weapons. Massive war has become a world ending event, and we are stuck in low intensity conflicts that neither motivate the masses nor spur any need for production.

not even addressing the first point...
but for the second, I'd say it relates more to the triumph of the 'not my problem' mentality, the impact of which extends far beyond progress in military technology development.
and so begins another gigantic thread.

Awesome pics!
This is one of my favorite videos. It's of a streetcar traveling down Market Street in San Francisco in 1905, accompanied by an amazing song.

Yes... that's when they had a place and a non-destructive impact on industry. Now all they do is demand reward for mediocrity at the taxpayer's expense.
