Tijs Verwest (born january 17, 1969) better know as dj Tiësto, is without any doubt in the international DJ scene one of Hollands most populair DJ’s. In a short period of time he has become his own ‘statement’ with his typical Tiësto sound. Whether you like his music or not, nobody can deny the fact that the career of this man from Breda starts to develop all the signs of becoming a legend.

In England he steps up to the wheels of steel together with people like Paul Oakenfold, Underworld, Fat Boy Slim, Carl Cox and so on. Clubs in Holland have to try the utmost to book him for their party evenings. Out of his own office at Magik the Recordstore (also the residence of his own recording company) in Breda comes this little interview about the whirlwind that rushes through his life right now.

From when I was eight years old, I feel the need of sharing the music I like with other people. In the early days I played my records at drive-in disco shows and I played in a club called "De Lente" in Breda. I played all styles of music there. House, and populair music from the dutch charts. Soon I came to realize that I only wanted to play house music and started to do my sets at "The Spock" which is in Breda also. That was an underground club where people really wore trendy house clothing. It was a bit like Breda’s own ‘Gatecrasher’.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening I played my records there. Nowadays I think I’ve developped my own sound in that period, because I never got to listen to other DJ’s while playing every night myself. I’ve never been influenced by other DJ’s.

A labelmanager of Basic Beat Recordings (Rotterdam) was one of the regular guests in ‘the Spock’ and he heard me play. He pulled some strings at the company and I got to mix my first CD. Soon to become my first series of CD’s called ‘Forbidden Paradise’ and very well known all over England and Scandinavia. I was asked to come and play my records in those countries a lot. At that time I was the ‘Number One’ DJ in scandinavia but in my own country nobody except a select group of people was aware of my capabilities as a DJ. It took me about two more years to come to my breaktrough in my own country.

My career got really going when I started to produce my own Magik CD series. I started my own record label (black hole recordings) and I signed up into a bookingoffice. My bookingagent got me into many clubs. Many of those clubs asked me again after doing my set there and that’s how I’ve established my name in the house scnene.

Most of that has to do with the urge I have to play my records. I’m very very eager to play my records. I’m a tremendous fanatic and I put a lot of enthusiasm into doing ‘my thing’

I think everybody in Holland saw my performance at InnerCity in the beginning of 1999. First on television and later on videotape. After my InnerCity set, people saw me crying in public, because I just had such a huge experience. I got so many reactions to that performance. Some people think that you’re gay because you respond to those emotions in the way that I did, other people think that that’s the way I am. I don’t care what people think of it.

play my records in Holland at least two weekends a month. To me Holland is most important, I believe it’s my nationalism. When you do well outside your own country and in it, where your roots are, you can’t find a way to make it to the top, it is very dissatisfying and demotivating! I do play a lot in foreign countries; in England at the Gatecrasher parties in Sheffield, that is so cool! Eight times a year I have a set there. Six times a year I play in Israël. Always on a Thursday because in Israël Thursday is the day people dress up and go out. Friday sabbath starts, so Saturday there is what Sunday is here. That’s fine by me because that way I get to keep my weekends to do some other sets. I still play a lot in Skandinavia and Holland.

I don’t care with whom I play my records. I do like it more if the DJ who plays his records before me has a different style than I do. A night with different styles is better than a monotonous evening. I notice it when I play my first record. If a club-styled DJ played before me, my sound gets an extra cheer from the audience, just like his first record gets an extra cheer after I played my records.
Now about me looking up to other DJ’s. This summer I played in Leeds at a big festival. I played there with DJ’s like Judge Jules, Carl Cox, Sasha, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, Erick Morillo, David Morales and acts like the Chemical Brothers and Underworld. At that moment I really thought: "WOW !!! How bizarre can it get!". Luckily, the rest of my time I can’t find a moment to think about my ‘success’. Just once in a while I think about it and than I realize how fast my sun is rising.

I would like to play all over the world. A little bit like Paul Oakenfold. Furthermore I would like to create a quality act, like Faithless or Fat Boy Slim. A real heavy act with great music, songs and dance.
In April this year I opened my own recordstore ‘Magik’, together with a very good friend of mine in the center of Breda. Everybody thinks that we only sell trance there, but that isn’t true at all. When I’m in Holland I spend most of my time there, also because that is the place where I keep the office of my recordcompany. I hope everything can keep up with the pace my career is developping now. If it can, I know that I and the people around me will have a very prosperous future.
