That's not fair, 'techno' is the catch-all genre cretins use to describe anything with a drum machine in it.
But it's becoming silly. The over-specialization of genres with so many quirky twists as to what sticks one song in one genre from another. I can understand the general ones like break-beat, trance, drum and bass, house, chill, and ambient. It's when people start using words like progressive, tech, hard, deep (I'm guilty of using deep, along with progressive to describe my pap), big, dub, and step.
Techno went from being a word which aptly described Depeche Mode (Front242, Netzer Ebb, et al) - also described as industrial and total (especially after they lost Alan Wilder) - to being a word with Detroit in front of it with a very quantized rhythmic structure which sounded like a hybrid of proper trance and minimal.
It's crap - the whole system of classifying electronic music with all of its genres, genre bias, self-proclaimed genre experts, and the marketing hacks who have done as much to make such a system as useless as possible by co-opting anything which had the potential for aggrandizement - total, complete and utter crap.
Out of spite, I will refer to the lot of it as techno, from now on.
I only listen to minimal tech psytrance-step 'n' bass.

I'm only kidding. Nothing gets me going like some good deep dub full-on break-house.

Totally know what you mean. I went to some show where DJ Dan started spinning Deep-Tech-Dub Acid-House and transitioned it all the way to Miami Bass Mushroom Jazz Breaks.
