And the only scene from Tetsuo I've ever seen scared the hell out of me, hah.

That works if you're talking about the intangible reason why you don't feel any spark for excessively "ethnic" (or whatever) films, but it doesn't really justify considering samurai as excessively culturally specific subject matter in the first place. Your dislike of war is surely unrelated, because war is the precise opposite of culturally specific.
Well, there's a link from samurai to something more universal, but what I meant to say is that there are no samurais outside Japan... even if all samurais are soldiers, not all soldiers are samurais.

Also, you can't really consider a corny Americand period action film like The Last Samurai to be Japanese cinema.
That's just me being playful :p

How xenophobic can someone who likes foreign films be? :p
What i mean is, i think as humans there is nothing that we can't relate to, on some level: Of course you're not going to see a film the same way the intended audience would, but that's the beauty of cinema...
It sounds extremely xenophobic to suggest that people are THAT different that you can't understand anything about them...
7 samurai is a completely human story, and has very little to do with anything culturally specific, EXCEPT for it's setting... The story is one of the oldest known to man: Underdog attempting to overcome adversity, while maintaining dignity... every culture has similar stories, and similar values, it's not a 'samurai' thing, it's merely told thru that avenue in this instance...
7 samurai is interesting also because it was made into the insanely popular western 'The Magnificent 7"... The story isn't a culturally specific one, it's a human one imo... I think it's either xenophobic or narcissistic to say they're beyond your grasp, especially since you seem like a well-read, worldly guy... really strange thing to say :p

Guys, just stop trying to argue with Lira. It's fruitless. He's a hopeless case. Someone who adores this picture is beyond any salvation:

Hm, I don't know any of these movies. Surely there must a website of that film festival where you can see what each movie is about? Based on that and maybe some IMDB ratings, it might be easier for you to pick. That's how I did it last time during the Cinemasia festival and I don't regret any of the movies I watched.
Talking about Jap cinema, Norwegian Wood will be released soon :)
Oh and btw, I don't like movies about ninjas, gladiators, knights either. Sooooooo not appealing to me, yawn.

I've got a flyer with all the synopses, but the descriptions are pretty useless. Here's the one for "Dersu Uzala":
"Dersu is a Mongolian peasant that works as a guide for a Russian officer, leader of a geographical expedition in Siberia. Dersu is humble and wise, and he changes the lives of everyone around him."
Really? "Dersu is humble and wise"? "Changes the lives of those around him"? This could be a prequel to Brokeback Mountain (so he changes everyone else's lives by making them gay) as well as a horror movie in which Dersu turns out to be the bloodthirsty descendent of Genghis Khan and changes everyone's lives by annihilating their pets! I mean, it's based on this book:
So it has got to be a trap :p
Actually, you gave me a good idea. Perhaps I should turn to Wikipedia for help too :)

And I can hardly wait... I started reading the original, and it was very amusing. I don't remember why I put it down.

But that's simply because you've got an awesome taste!

If you want to avoid the sort of typical "heavy" festival film, why not a "light" comedy like Kikujiro among the films you listed?
Sountrack of Joe Hisaishi is wonderful and no, it is not your typical US braindead comedy film.

And I think we have a winner! Thanks :)
