I've moderated online forums since about 1990 - except back then it was on multi-line BBS' (16+ lines) and certain Fidonet groups (similar to newsgroups) and it's still a learning experience. The main thing that has remained consistent is that people like to go online to escape the day-to-day (rules/laws/restrictions/whatever) and would rather participate in a community that doesn't make them read/follow A TON of rules.
The problem with having a bunch of rules is that when you fail to implicitly state something then people will use that as an excuse to DO IT (bastards!). We have rules on event listings/guestlists/signatures and frown upon racists/total douchebag(ette) behaviour -- outside of that, it's fair game. |
