I like stuff. But in particular I am most happy when I get stuff for free. What does that say?

quit busting my balls woman! the thread was started about a fanny pack when I wasn't working and in school, and turned into discussion of current sales/deals anyway :)

Thanks for posting this article!

I've spent my life working my ass of to essentially get to the point I am at now. I now have the income to do almost anything I want and yet I still look back at my university days when I was a poor student and think of this period in my life as one of the best. Money really doesn't need to dictate our happiness but unfortunately, it does. I totally agree that experiences and events > things...and I really have to work hard now on NOT allowing myself to be sucked into the mentality that consumption=happiness....

that's the thing though - with the way our society operates now, that IS the equation
and it's hard to break away from it!

Great article for sure, and I really believe the idea that you get more happiness out of experiences than possessions.

I've been lucky enough to have travelled all over the world and I can honestly say it is one of the most rewarding things for me (although that may change when my baby boy is born in a month...lol!). But....I've only been able to do that by working hard and having the income to do so.

And I also think I look at life a bit differently than most. Sure I work hard at making money, but I do this so that I can afford to experience everything that life has to offer. I'm not looking to die with a couple million in the bank (although again that may change now that I will have a son to worry about) but I'm more concerned with doing everything on this planet I want to do before I die. I think when I'm on my death bed I'll be remembering all the experiences I've had, rather than remembering how much money I made or what I've bought in the past.

For those that know me, I've always harped on such an ethos.

It's not about what you have, it's about what you do.

B/c as Hommer said, "you could wake up dead tomorrow boy". Which is to say, you can't take anything with you. Therefore all you can hope to leave behind are memories. So leaves as many good ones, with as many people, as possible.

i like the idea of spending money on experiences instead of stuff. Ive been living that for years. But im not a fan of staycations or home theatre experiences as a substitute for going out or going away.

Cocooning is a negative thing in my books.

the fact that some actually need an article to open their minds to this is unbelievable.

This is kind of obvious to me. Possessions, beyond fulfilling a need, don't mean a whole lot. In renting a place to live, my main focus is location, to minimize time spent going to work, and to be close to everything. Ditto with a car, something that get's to where I'm going to with as little cost, without making me look like an idiot or douchebag.

I don't agree with "staycations" and the like. They isolate you from the world, whereas I believe in socializing and connecting with people, developing interests and ideas with others, etc.

Maximizing my free time is pretty important to me, so I try to use my vacation time wisely (Burning Man woooo!). It's always good to have friends to travel with that share a similar pov.

The problem I've started to see is that people, especially younger people, are enjoying experiences but not thinking about the future. The live in the moment thing is only good when you don't worry about what the future may hold.

I wonder how many people actually have enough savings put aside that would allow them to live income free for three months.
