I suppose there is always the option of having the feeling of security provided by a large income without buying a ton of stuff, though. Hardly any people seem to take that route.

Make $200,000 and spend like you make $30,000? ;)

That's what I used to do. That said, I don't really consider this kind of research legitimate.

Don't spend money in excess.

Money/wealth = freedom and much more choice to do the things you want with your life. I don't think many people are being honest with themselves if they say "more money wouldn't make me happy". Screw that... it does. It's only the buffoons who mismanage it and lose it all that complain about how "money ruined my life!"

I don't live a complicated life with a bunch of "stuff"... I sock a lot of it away and just want a good house, a nice whip, and a foundation for my kids (who don't exist yet) so they don't have to lack opportunity growing up. When I do spend, I spend on more investments to grow it, or for experiences I can share with my wife like traveling or something.

You've completed missed the point. It isn't about going without money. The article cites a paper called “If Money Doesn’t Make You Happy Then You Probably Aren’t Spending It Right.” It's about materialism and consumption. The point the article is making about money is that people tend to spend what they have. They don't realise that much of their consumption is mindless and for its own sake.

It should be re-titled "If Money Doesn’t Make You Happy Then You Probably Aren’t Spending It Right or Making Enough in the First Place or You're Grossly Mismanaging It".

One major finding is that spending money for an experience — concert tickets, French lessons, sushi-rolling classes, a hotel room in Monaco — produces longer-lasting satisfaction than spending money on plain old stuff.

I think computer games are somewhere in between, since when you buy them you get the extended experience of playing them rather than letting them sit in your living room or something. Musical instruments or art supplies are along the same lines: buying a guitar or set of paints gives you access to the experience of playing or painting. The objects are valued not for themselves but for the fun they provide.

Then again, one might say the same about a fancy sports car, I guess.

Tautologies are always snappier.

There is no need for any one human to posses the sheer volume of money that some people possess. None.

And there is no amount of work that any one human could do that is worth that much money. None.

I'd say there should be an income ceiling, but it'd be too impractical to implement. I am, however, fully comfortable with 99.9999% income taxes for some.

Until you have that much. Then your perspective changes.

But what if I need to lay on a beach all day everyday drinking/smoking myself silly? I’d need a fair bit to get away with that.

You can’t interfere in the contracts of two consenting parties. If I want to pay you a million dollars to bring out the red & white swimwear, I should be able to.

Money and nice things make me happy, as much as I live below my means being a massive tightwad conservative consumer, there is an essence of freedom not worrying about bills and the essential basics of life.
