Recruiters...DOS and DONTS?
View this Thread in Original format

Are there any DOs or DO NOTs in I should be aware of when speaking with a recruiter? I have a phone meeting with one today and I am sort of new at this. He found me on linkedin and the job sounds far too good to be true and right up my alley.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hear him out but be wary and ask all the right questions you need to to figure out that the position is:

a.) valid...

b.) something that fits with your direction
Capo di tutti
If you are at liberty to wait for the right job, do not jump...

If you are a "how high should I jump" candidate you will be coined desperate and they'll throw a lot of your way you don't want.

Remember they work for you..be firm, demanding and you layout your guidelines, rules, expectations.

Generally better to go with a smaller firm who are more focused and less production they go after fewer jobs with higher base than a larger firm who just pump out alot of 30-40k jobs to hit sales targets and to get bonuses.

In all honesty I would preach craigslist..why?

The employer does not pay a royalty or percentage to a recruiter, there is no middleman, you deal direct meaning no favoritism or forgetfulness by way of a recruiter.

Take it from me, I've worked on Bay st. Stock Market, Biz Develop. and Planning for a travel company and now as an exec at a start up and I found every single job on craigslist...

^ recruiters post adds on Craigs as well - this is how I got my current job back in 2008. The add looked like a employer add but was in fact a recruiter add - but the agency was quite nice anyway, and presented me with few other options to consider

Yeah...

That's best case because you see a job that fits you as a oppose to a job they try to say is a fit for you, going through an agency the conventional way.

This recruiter doesn't work for me... He is working for a company and is seeking me as a potential candidate.

You sell yourself, let your balls swing...in the end you make him money for making the right choice, no?

A recruiter gets paid a certain percentage of the employee's annual salary, usually 50% upfront and 50% after three months. He definitely works for the employer and not the candidate. Although he wants to fill the position quickly and get paid, it's in his best interest to make sure it's the right candidate and a right fit for both parties. He'll want the employer to be happy so his services are used agin in the future...

well then treat it like any other job interview... (re: do's and don'ts) this person is more important than the hiring manager...

good luck!

Well, the hiring manager will actually have the last say and make the decision. But definitely treat the meeting with the recruiter as your first interview. If they don't like you, you’re not even getting to the real interview.

Thanks for everyones input.

I'm pretty sure everything went really well - he seemed to be really happy - he just has to present me to the company to see if they are interested in interviewing with me.
