Abuse is quite numerous in Saudi Arabia, and other nearby countries. These maids do not have the freedom to "just" get away, because their passports and in most cases salaries are held by the host. Since most of these hosts are wealthier, the police are less likely to do something to protect the maids. Abuses by hosts range from physical to sexual, with many maids getting involuntarily pregnant. This one incident is not a rare case, and most of these maids are not only abused by the host men but also the host wife(s). Yes, in some case it is multiple wives. These abuse cases do not reflect the majority of the people living in those countries, but the numbers are significant for people to be aware of what is going on over there. |

Bingo. Add Dubai to that list, not long ago I remember reading a prolific article on how one of the royals there ran over and killed in rage one of these "slave workers" from India, and it was videotaped accidentally. Of course, the charges never materialized.
There are plenty of other examples, I've heard them many times before. The main problem is the lack of justice. Here in Canada, maid abuse when uncovered becomes a big story and perpetrators get punished, because we have a fair justice system. In Saudi Arabia, those maids are considered as cattle, inferior people, and there is no justice. On the other hand, if a Saudi is injured, assaulted or killed by a maid, that becomes a reason for anger and more maid abuse. Punishment is, of course, very severe.

Ugh...this makes me want to NEVER visit that part of the world....what a shame....
I hope the maid's husband flies back there and gets revenge on the people who did this if the state wont get justice... |
