So

Is it worth joining associations outside your country?

Here when you join socan you also join ASCAP (as an artist I believe - or optionally BMI)

What about european ones -- I've actually been played on radio in Europe and Canada previously - as well as had some of my tracks used for performance.

Any opinions on these organizations around the world? Worth the time to join or not?

No if you're affiliated to a proper one they should collect your earnings from outside their territory as well by hooking up with other international organisations that do the same in another territory.

your local association cares if the track is played elsewhere, but they usually do an estimation:

eg: This track has been played 100 times in radio 500 times in clubs and 1000 in shops, hairdressers etc... then pay you accordingly to their estimations (and is hilarious, they can say that David Guetta - Sexy Bitch has been played less than 1000 times in clubs...)

I think this associations are unworthy... don't know any dj in my country who has an agreement with them , is more for pop bands, so unless you get massive plays outside your country don't bother, however i believe european associations are better than the spanish one who is quite young and amateur.
