I mean, e.g. if you have 40 CDs and you want to create some sort of database, which shows you track X is on CD Y and so on. I seriously need such a program, any suggestions?

Get a program called Audiolist. Created by a guy over at the somethingawful.com forums. This program will list your cds like this:

code:
Artist/Album Size Bitrate(s) ============================================================================== Incubus - Enjoy 40.1 VBR Incubus - Fungus Amongus 35.0 128 Incubus - Live @ MTV Acoustic 52.2 192 Incubus - Make Yourself 59.4 VBR Incubus - Morning View 78.8 VBR Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E 52.6 128 Incubus - When Incubus Attacks - Vol.1 50.8 VBR Incubus-Breakfast_With_Incubus_10-26-01-2001-PMS 66.0 192 Incubus-Morning_View_Sessions-2001-PMS 104.0 192 incubus - acoustic-electric remixes - .88 192 ms) (2001-pm 54.8 192 Paul Oakenfold - Tranceport 76.1 VBR Sarah McLachlan - Remixed 69.8 VBR

Just tell the program what directory all your cd folders are in and booya! it does all the work for ya!

thats cool but this program then doesnt create a database - for example it wont let you do a search on which cd is the track you need. imagine looking for a particular track and not remembering on which cd you have it - youll need browsing trough all you cd collection to find it:(

It saves the file into a .txt or a .html file. then if you want to know what CD an album is on, just search for the name on the list. this is My main list of my 26 or so mp3 cds:

A sample:
code:
Artist/Album Size Bitrate(s) ============================================================================== CD 1 Rush - 1982 - Signals 61.1 VBR Rush - 1984 - Grace Under Pressure 56.7 VBR Rush - 1985 - Power Windows 63.4 VBR Rush - 1987 - Hold Your Fire 66.3 VBR Rush - 1989 - A Show of Hands 103.3 VBR Rush - 1989 - Presto 71.7 VBR Rush - 1990 - Chronicles (Disc 1) 103.8 VBR Rush - 1990 - Chronicles (Disc 2) 96.8 VBR CD 2 Pink Floyd Pink Floyd - Ummagumma Ummagumma - Live Album 54.2 VBR Ummagumma - Studio Album 64.6 VBR Pink Floyd - Us and Them 88.2 VBR Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 61.5 VBR Requiem For A Dream Score 57.9 VBR Rush - 2002 - Vapor Trails 92.5 192 Rush - Retrospective I (1974-1980) 88.0 VBR Soundtrack - The Royal Tenenbaums 79.8 VBR Soundtrack - Vanilla Sky 96.3 VBR CD 3 A Boy Named Goo 81.0 VBR Ayumi_Hamasaki-cyber_trance_presents_ayu_trance-JPOP-10.01 66.9 VBR Bob Dylan - The Very Best Of (disc 1) 55.1 160 Chemical Four 75.3 192 Dizzy Up the Girl 69.5 VBR ayumi hamasaki - ayu-mi-x 4 acoustic orchestra 98.1 192 ayumi hamasaki - ayu-mi-x 4 selection non stop mega mix cd1 102.5 192 cd2 49.1 192 hot uncensored track 4+5 action 18.8 192 ayumi_hamasaki-i_am-JPOP-02.02-[aP] 32.6 VBR CD 4 Blade II Soundtrack (MPC insane by helstegt) Celine Dion - A New Day Has Come 99.0 192 DJ Tiesto - In Search Of Sunrise 3 DJ Tiesto-In Search of Sunrise 3 109.4 192 Dreams of Freedom - Ambient Remixes of Bob Marley in Dub - 92.8 VBR Goo_Goo_Dolls-Gutterflower-RETAIL-2002-4HM 47.3 192 Paul_Oakenfold-Bunkka-PROMO-2002-RNS 71.1 192 -TA-COMPLETE-[2002-Electronic-192kbps-stereo-44khz]-TA- Weezer_-_Maladroit_Retail-2002-aAF 46.8 192 Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 57.5 VBR CD 5 Global Underground 020 - Darren Emerson in Singapore 196.2 VBR Global Underground 10 - Danny Tenaglia in Athens 114.0 128, 160 Global Underground 16 205.8 VBR Rank 1 - Symsonic 77.7 160

So all you do is open the .txt file, hit ctrl+f, then type in the album name you want and boom, it goes right to it.

The other programs prolly do databases more with more options and such but this program I find to be the easiest, most simple program to use. It literally takes 1 minute to make up a database.

Oh I read your question wrong. No it does not have the capability to search for tracks as it only recognizes folders
RenderedDream
i use whereist

well this is a CD catalog software and the only flaw i encountered is that i can't manage to print a list of selected files i want
DJ_Lord
WMA! hehe

BeatFreak
I use the Windows XP Explorer. You can sort them all by name, size, duration, modified (important so you can list newest first), etc.

I've also used MPEG Audio Collection you can get from www.download.com.

I don't like having to refresh though to load my new mp3's. Windows Explorer does it automatically.
CygnusX
I keep a Winamp Generated Playlist of every cd in a directory and when I need something I just search for the trackname in the html-files.
No other software needed :D
