Anyone know what synth they use for the signature smooth pads?? It is always the same sound, heard mainly on secondtoughestintheinfants, Beaucoup Fish and 100 days off.

I've tried recreating it on various synths, typically a couple of Osc on Saw, through an LPF with some slow phaser fx on it but it doesn't sound right.

You mean this sound like from "Pearl's Girl" album version?:

I read that they used Juno 6 / 60 / 106 in that period (I used Juno 6 to make the clip). Some of their pads sound like saw and square mix. The Junos let you control the pulse width of the square osc, so you can adjust it until it sounds just right against the saw, and they have a nice chorus effect. The clip is saw + square + subosc, some noise, chorus, medium resonance. The last bit is just me fooling around trying to get the big synth noise from "Cups" (in the track it sounds like they are switching up the pulse width between synth bursts).

:p

There is also another pad they use more on Beaucoup Fish that sounds like a synth string with a high pass filter and phaser. Not sure which sound you mean.

Definately sounds like on old 80s Roland synth. It also sounds like a sampler triggering chords, which may explain some of the timbre you're finding it tricky to reproduce.

^^^ Possibly this...

Post a specific sample?

I approve of this thread greatly <3 underworld:D

some guy on youtube did a tutorial for Cups, think he used a Roland V-synth - ing love that lead, its got a lovely resonance on it

Nice sound, and thanks for the effort you put in. Its close to what I mean. The best example of the pad I'm on about is on 'Bansyle/Sappy's Curry' at about 5:55 and it continues for the duration of the track. It is so warm and full. Love it. As I said I've got close to this but not as close as I like, which leads me to think it's something specific to the oscillators / filters / fx on the synth used.

And

@Tehlord. I agree, some of the Underworld pads definately sound sampled, you can sometimes hear the loop points. But I reckon it is the same synth they sampled. Probably made the sound on their synth then sampled it to phatten it up / layer it or add some fx via the sampler.

The one in that track definitely sounds like a Juno. But I think theirs has a bit less resonance on it than mine, and different chords obviously.

The fanboy posts stating that the PS3 is the best console with the better pad are purely opinions and not relevant to your question. (any mark downs I get will be due to me having a more balanced and mature viewpoint, which doesn't agree with theirs) Personally I find the 360 pad far more comfortable than the 3rd generation of Dual Shock that has been used for the past 11 years.. but again this is my own preference!

Both PS3 and 360 versions are pretty much identical graphically, but the 360 offers two exclusive downloadable content packages, 'Beneath the Ashes' and 'Lara's Shadow' There are also two classic outfits from past Tomb Raider games available for free download and two additional wetsuits (again all this content is only available on Xbox 360)

So if you enjoy Tomb Raider I'd go for the 360 version as it offers all the extra content for fans of the series!

I like that pluck-ish low sound in the beginning of Dark & Long.
