alright, quick question, i won't bother really explaining....
i might transfer to a university in england
i have good grades (3.847 GPA on the USA system)
i'm majoring in Computer Science and Information Studies, which for anyone who doesn't know means Programming and Networking
i would like to go to a GOOD school (thats good in computers too), but quite frankly i don't know about english universities
london area would be prefered i guess
i'm entering my second year now here in the USA, and i have 45 hours out of the way (one semester ahead already)
now, i figure i would ask here because i have no idea where to look online, a lot of TA's are also computer people so they might be at some of these schools and can give me some inside info
any info, any reply, any link in a right direction is greatly appricated! thank you! |

You could try www.ucas.com
UCAS is England's national university service type people. Virtually everyone goes through UCAS, so I'm sure they could answer your questions.
England is a good place to study because education here is completely free, unlike the US. Students just need to pay for their accommodation and living costs out of their own pocket, most people get a bank loan, which for students gives a decent rate.
Scotland however is even better for studying. In Scotland, like it was in England for many years until a couple of years ago, not only is University free, but you get a grant of about £3000 - 4000, which you never have to pay back. It's yours. Most students get a loan on top of this anyway.
Coming from the US you might not get a grant if you were to study somewhere like Scotland, and you might have to pay. I'm not sure what the deal is, maybe you will get free education if you're living in the UK and paying taxes I guess.
UCAS is a good place to start looking though. |

just a word of warning about going to a london university. Its probably the most expensive part of england to live in. So if you hav a lot of cash behind you then great, if not then just keep in mind its rather pricey. |

well there is another option...my girl will be studying in london starting oct 2003, so if we lived together that would cut down the costs
but the university is more important to me than the money or location, just as long as its not TOO far from london
btw alex, the ucas site keeps throwing me in circles...the only real ratings i was able to find on schools where from 1994, and i think i need a bit more recent to decide which school i should go to for computers...i just don't really understand your education system, so i'm really confused, but thanks anyway...i'm going to call my girl tomorrow and talk to her about it, she probably knows some good info |

Education here IS NOT completely free. We have to pay tuition fees of just over £1000 ($1400) EACH year.
Anbd thats for UK students.
For higher profile courses, eg Medicine, Law, Architecture, Finance, the fees are INCREASED for foreign students. and guess what? They're a ing joke.
we're talking approximately £20,000 PER YEAR! (almost $30,000)
and thats for almost evey university. I don't know about the charges for programming, but they'd be very similar. :whip: :whip:
good uniniversity's for Computing and stuff are:
Imperial College
UCL (University College of London)
London University
Good luck persuading your parents to pay the fees...
Or u could apply for a scholarship... That will let you bypass the tuition fees.
Cost of living in London is only high if you're are looking to live privately i.e rent a house out that is not owned by the university.
If u rent a room/apartment that is owned by the Uni, the price ranges from £75 - 110 per week, and thats the same, wherever u go. Cos the prices are set by Ucas, or the government, I think.
For scores etc on Uni's You can request Last years results from ucas. I think there's an address or something where u can ask for one to be sent to u. |

my halls at leeds uni was only something like £30 a week and liven privatley is costing me £48.50 a week, there are some statistics somewhere showing cost of student living compared from town to town (and city to city!) |
