Check out this Wikipedia entry. Has a bunch of free stuf (GPL,Phorum,Artistic licenses) and non-free (proprietary) stuff.
Most people I have seen run PHPBB, but it has been years since I knew anyone that ran a forum independently. |

phpBB isnt that bad anymore and is probably the best/free wise
