You would think he would try to make this slightly less obvious. Why do so many artists insist on blatantly stealing great music?

The Deadmau5 Event Horizon - the point an artist reaches where success becomes so self-propagating that one no longer has to try to maintain it and actually stops trying beyond their fundamental skill level.

Yeah I've heard this before at work. I started laughing my ass off.

It's just on a mixtape, not off an album, as far as I remember. All the songs on it were just him rapping over other instrumentals.

I see, that makes more sense. I just heard it being like :wtf:

That's awful. It reminds me of some guy who tried to rap to "Ghosts n Stuff" - truly unlistenable. Danger Mouse really had magic in a bottle with the Grey Album. That was high art - what should be done in both homage to the original material and recognition of a new music form.

When you have s who run through the complete chorus of Joni Mitchel's "Big Yellow Taxi", preempting that song's musicality with drivel, you're bound to get like this, too.

He's not the first rapper to sample Children, and this isn't the worst I've ever heard.

I don't see the problem, anyway. Everyone samples, especially in hip-hop. Does it suddenly become unacceptable when it's one of your childhood favourites being looped?

Just speaking for myself - it's not my favorite song and wasn't, when it first came out. I liked it, but it's not anything that's being trampled on. My problem is with the reliance on excessive looping. It just sounds cheap, but a lot of that is my own ego super-imposing a standard for production value.

I've tried to like songs which use wholesale looping and I can't. When I can hear the lyrics put to better music in my head, I don't think it will ever do to just hear them set to something against which they just sound atypical.

Hip-hop is based on looping. The whole thing started when DJs began looping the bars of funk drums that made people dance the most. If you don't like a looped sample then you don't like hip-hop.

This is not the greatest piece of sampling in the world, but the language of "ripping off" and "blatantly stealing" suggests that Kid Cudi has done something unacceptable or immoral, as opposed to a slightly shoddy job.

Initially I thought this was an album production where the beat was a bad reproduction of Children passed off as their own work, not a standard beat with Children's melody being looped. I didn't know it was just a mixtape track among various other looped instrumentals. My mistake.

The same melody and chords must be a pure coincidence too.
