Collectives? (also does anyone want to start a TA Ambient collecetive?)

Anyone worked as part of a collective before? I'd like to work with some other producers on here doing some ambient tracks.... JBJ and I have talked about it in the past, but never put much effort into starting one.

I was wondering what anyones experiences are? How did you work together, did you all use the same software, agree to the same VSTs or synths, etc so projects can easily be shared?

I'd like to make it the least technical as possible... luckily with ambient there is a lot of room to maneuver in terms of how elements are shared.

BTW this would all be remote obviously... I have done stuff with friends in person but I think, at least for me, working individually and not in the same studio would be more creative, or at least less pressure.

Anywho, share your thoughts! :D

BTW I would actually consider this a call to form an ambient collective here on TA.

If people are interested let me know. I can set up FTP space to share songs and elements. I was thinking we could use something like a private google wave group to share our ideas too, or a skype group (I have used this for work and both seem to work well for collaborating).

I would be down for this.

I have a friend from Norway that I collaborate with and it's proven to be extremely easy so far. We acquire a sense of direction and invent ideas beforehand, then we begin complementing them with music, adding additional ideas as we go along. We pass WAVS, project files and ideas through a shared Dropbox account.

This is certainly one of my favourite ways of working. I hope we can make this happen!

i tried this a few times and it was very difficult not being in the same room and on the same computer imo.

I wish you all the best with this and cannot wait to hear it out!

In addition to looking like an interesting sequencer, Ohm Studio looks like a fun collaborative tool. You should check it out! Not released yet, but you can sign up for beta testing.

For the FL Studio users, someone over on the OC Remix forums launched this as a tool for collabs and competitions about a month back. I haven't used it myself, but it looks cool.

Doesn't the new version of Live lets you do collaborations?

Me and a friend do collabs over dropbox but we have identical plugins and sample libraries.

They dropped the feature as it became unworkable afaik.

With the same DAW and VSTs, collabs are easy (i've done one so far), and even sharing WAVs is doable. You really do need to be on the same page as the collaborator though, and i'd shudder at the thought of doing it with more than one other person.

I guess the idea of the collective is more just having a group of like minded people, or people interested in producing the same genre and letting them team up on projects. :p

I am interested.

But I don't think anyone else here uses my DAW (Studio One), so I am not sure how that would work out.

One thing I had thought of before is having a common space to upload WAV samples / ideas we had found or made if we are interested in seeing what other ambient producers might do with them.

I have never actually collaborated with anyone before. It seems like it would be really difficult over a distance and without any familiarity with the other person's working methods.
