MIGRASHUN WELCOMES: LUCY (Stroboscopic Artefacts)
Featuring: Lucy (Berlin), Codine (Detroit), Mathias Matthew (Chicago), and Aron Ryan (Chicago)
Friday, October 22nd, 2010
(noun) migrashun “Directed, regular, or systematic movement of a group of objects, organisms, or people”
Migrashun is proud to present Lucy of Stroboscopic Artefacts from Berlin, Germany!
Showing no signs of slowing down, Migrashun is determined to drive their train in any direction they seem appropriate, whether on or off the tracks. People are taking notice. Having already brought the city of Chicago events featuring the likes of Fairmont, Luke Hess, James Holden, Sarah Goldfarb and DJ Koze this year, we now find the team sinking their paws into the world of COMPRESSED DUB.
The term compressed dub has been coined by publications for describing Lucy’s label, Stroboscopic Artefacts, the young Berlin-based imprint that has been making waves in the techno community over the past year. Supported by giants of electronic music such as Joris Voorn, Dj Hell, Steve Lawler, Derrick May, Laurent Garnier, Agoria, James Holden, John Digweed and more, Lucy is confirmed as one of the most interesting newcomers to the underground scene.
We expect nothing but greatness on what sure is to be an eye and ear opening night. Joining Lucy on this special night will be Detroit based artist, Codine who has release music on labels such as Blank Artists and D-Records. Extra support given by Migrashun founder Mathias Matthew and rising star Aron Ryan (event co-producer) from the Collusion collective.
The event will be taking place in the private basement room of Vision Nightclub called “The Lair”. Password must be given at the Vision entrance in order to gain entry. When the password is given you will be directed to a separate, private entrance to the event. Top notch sound, lighting and visuals, which have become a staple of Migrashun events, will be present.

"As many of you know, my love for techno, and all its sub genres, has been seriously revived. It’s due to artists like Lucy (soundcloud page), and his label, Stroboscopic Artefacts. Techno has known no boundaries for the duration of its lifespan, which doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. On October 22nd, Chicago gets to witness, IMO, one of the most important things going on in the world of electronic music today. Migrashun Chicago is bringing label founder Lucy into this fine city, for what is sure to be a stellar evening of “compressed dub.” His label was recently featured on Resident Advisor’s Label of the Month section. You can also here the mix that he put together for this particular write-up, here, which feature some of the most important producers in techno today. The event features support from Codine (Blank Artists / Detroit), Mathias Matthew (Migrashun / Chicago), and Aron Ryan (Collusion / Chicago). Make sure to check the event page for discounted, early bird tickets for only $6!" |

Stroboscopic Artefacts' boss Lucy will hit the road later this month for dates in the US and Mexico.
It wouldn't be too much of a push to suggest Stroboscopic Artefacts has been the in-form techno imprint this year. Between their Monad series of releases over the summer, various artists samplers, and original material from Lucy & Ercolino, the Berlin-based imprint has acquired a groundswell of support while carving out a distinct sonic niche for itself. If you didn't catch it first time around, we suggest getting properly acquainted with Lucy and his imprint through RA's recent Label of the month feature.
The mini-tour will begin on Friday, October 15 in LA with a show at the city's King King Club for Incognito. Lucy will then fly south the following evening for a debut Mexican show, spinning at the highly regarded Bar Americas venue. Chicago's The Lair venue will be Lucy's destination the following Friday, before heading to NYC the following night for a set at National Underground alongside label mate Donor. |

Lucy: producer, DJ, founder of Stroboscopic Artefacts. That’s probably how you know him. But there’s also Luca Mortellaro, a published author, experimental sound designer, and the man behind the Lucy moniker. There’s no doubt that the two are linked, but it’s certainly the hidden facets of Luca Mortellaro that are responsible for the dynamic output of Lucy.
In 2005 Lucy left his native Italy for Paris. In search of romance? Perhaps. The fact that the very first demo he ever sent was noticed by James Holden and that he’s now releasing on Luke Slater’s Mote Evolver, makes Lucy’s story more than romantic, it’s fit for the silver screen. As he delved deeper into electronic music Lucy made the essential move from Paris to Berlin. It was here he launched record label Stroboscopic Artefacts a platform that illuminates pioneering electronic music. Under Lucy’s careful curation Stroboscopic Artefacts has garnered international attention and emerged as one of the most exciting labels in the scene.
Lucy’s DJ sets are techno layered with deep dub and textured with lucid IDM. Never one to shy away from ripping into the peak time and equally in his element playing the ecstatic afterhours, elegance is the foundation of his approach. He manages to refuse the obvious and yet satisfies dancefloors’ appetites for the unexpected. A quick listen to his CLR podcast, Resident Advisor mix or the Modyfier process will attest to one thing: his elusive approach is too angular for genres and pigeon holes. It’s this quality that’s seen him grace the decks at Berghain, Fabric, New York’s Oktave party and Mexico’s Bar America.
With a host of EPs and remixes released and forthcoming on the most influential labels such as Prologue, Mote Evolver and CLR, looking towards the future is exciting. Particularly for Stroboscopic Artefacts, whose first full length release is Lucy’s debut album: “Wordplay For Working Bees”. |

Erik Cronin has been quietly producing under the name Codine since 2000. Influenced heavily by the Detroit electro
sounds of Aux 88, Dopplereffekt and the rigid, angular industrial rhythms of Nitzer Ebb, Cronin’s main objective
with the Codine project is to synthesize the two similar sonic worlds into a tapestry that is uniquely his own. After
several remixes and self released CD releases, Cronin made his live performance debut in 2004.
In 2006 he collaborated with Thinkbox artist Rob Theakston for an installation piece currently on tour in museums
and art galleries across the United States and Canada. 2007 beheld Codine’s debut on Detroit’s Blank Artists
imprint, with the sleeping giant entitled “Recent Events” and has followed up with subsequent releases that have
drawn a reputation for symbolizing the contemporary sound of Detroit Techno. This fall, Codine is releasing his
full-length album with Blank Artists featuring remixes from techno stalwarts Derek Plaslaiko, Patrick Russell and
Chicago producer, Alex Israel.

RECOMMENDED - NEW CITY
Preview: Lucy/Vision (The Lair)
Friday marks the Chicago club debut of Berlin-based producer Lucy (Luca Mortellaro), whose Stroboscopic Artefacts imprint has been gaining steam since its inception in 2009. Lucy has championed his self-applied techno tag of “compressed dub,” reflecting the influences of listening to the likes of Lee “Scratch” Perry and other reggae and dub sounds while in his youth in Italy. The result is that his techno productions and mixes are a dark, deep and unpredictable journey, from twinkling noises to a driving cacophony of sound—and everything in between. Joining Lucy behind the decks is Detroit’s Codine, whose releases on Blank Artists showcase a deft handle on Motor City techno both subtle and percussive. Rounding out the bill are DJs and event co-promoters Aron Ryan (Collusion) and Mathias Matthew. Matthew’s’ Migrashun crew also helped to bring in Christian Burkhardt to Vision last weekend, capping a rare two-week stretch of quality techno in the usually musically vacuous expanses of club fluff housed inside Vision—just make sure you head downstairs!
