BX5s are
Look at HS50s too, possibly more accurate than the RP5s. |

Thanks, you saved me there,
I see that the HS50s are going for about $199, guessing thats for one of them, which is not too bad? |

Yes they'll be $199 each.
I've also heard that JBL LSR2325Ps are pretty good and also some of the Behringer Truths are surprisingly good for the money, not sure exactly which ones though! |

Will check them out at a local shop this weekend.
Must admit, the pics of the lsr2325ps are not that appealing to my eyes.
I have about $580 to spend, which ones do you have, and how much did they cost? |

I have HS80s and they were £385, which is about $560 I think. Probably a good sized speaker for you as 5x7m is pretty big.
HS80s are very good, to my ears at least. My room is about the same size as yours, untreated and I have them facing the wrong way and against a wall. I'm still able to get excellent mixes out of them though, and will be considerably better when I move them to a treated space. |

so, do you mean that a 6" would be better for that room,
or 5" with a sub, or is all about placement of the monitors?
also, if possible, can you post a sample of your tunes before mastering with those monitors, and after? |

the HS80s are 8"
In a room your size you could get away with using 8" cones with a bit of treatment, although 5-6" with sub would work too. I'm not expert on placement but you want to keep the monitors away from walls and corners, tweeters at ear height and roughly facing 60deg inwards towards your listening position. Maybe 5' apart.
I don't really have a pre and post mastering example as I tend to just throw an EQ and limiter on the master before I render.
Here's a selection though, mostly in progress :-

the last two were done on the Hs80s.
This is also a new one done on them that's had about 3 hours work, and totally unmixed :-

I'm no expert mixmaster though, and there's plenty of people out there getting significantly better mixes than mine on HS80s. |

Thanks for the advise ;)
I have a crappy internet connection now, will check out those tracks later this evening. |

The HS80's are great monitors at a great price, but if you buy them, just make sure it's somewhere you can zake them back as they really don't work in small rooms (they just boom).
The Behringer Truth (2031A) were indeed great monitors that were originally designed a rip off of mackie HR824's and they did a surprisingly good job, but Behringer for seom ing stupid reason decided to change the designed slightly and there have been some mixed reviews. That aside, things have moved on (HS80's for instance) so they are not the super bargain they once were.
The HS50's while nice in terms of detail across the mid and upper range, start to roll off just below 100 and start to completely disappear below 80.
This is where the the JBL LSR2325p come in and IMO they are the best monitors under $400, period. Full frequency range, they go loud without screeching or distorting , have great detail and in all my years I've never heard any monitors that small put out that deep low end frequency response. They also work in small rooms, unlike the HS80's (although if you have the room the hs80's are just slightly better overall).
TBH, I think your room is big enough to cater to the hs80's which are a great investment, but in case they don't work, just make sure you buy from somewhere with a returns policy.
Stay away from the monitors and sub combo. Remember, you mix in 2.1 so why would you monitor like that. There's also no standard for sub crossovers on a 2.1 so it takes far more setup work to get an accurate representation of the freq spectrum. Not mention that monitors do a perfectly fine job of bass reproduction by themselves, so just don't give yourself the headache. |

| you should demo Genelec 8020 too, they are pretty cheap (compared to other genelecs atleast) and sound fantastic imo. they dont play that loud or deep though, like 65Hz. but im really happy with mine, and if you have a difficult room like i do theres many options back there to adjust so u get flat resonse. the hs80 didnt work here. |
