My answer is to wait if you can.

There is going to be a serious jump in performance across the imac and mac pro range in the next year, which either means if you've got the cash you'll end up a with a very serious computer of if not you'll steal a deal as they clear away the remaining units.

A lot of new technology is on the verge of being implemented such as USB3, lightpeak and new processors - it's going to be more of a jump in relative terms than we've seen in recent years, and that doesn't even mention the fact that over the next 6 months SSD's are going to become affordable and have way better optimization in OSX.

So if you can wait, do it, if not get an imac - they are currently the best value in terms of performance out there. The screens are beautiful , they make no noise, have low power consumption, and will be more than enough to do whatever you need.

Don't buy the Apple SSD option if you buy now - it's way overpriced for what it is and you can pick up an ssd for less than a third of what they're asking and install it yourself.

Stay away from the 6-core and 12-core Mac Pro's for now. They don't work with Logic as they supposed too. Apple will come with an update in the future, but when is unknown.

The same thing will happen with Sandy Bridge. You'll have those wonder full 16-core Mac Pro's, but you can't use it.

So if you go for a Mac Pro, better get a Quad core for now. Or an iMac if you don't care about expansions.
