So im trying to find speakers to check my mixes at home other than my main monitors which are genelec 8040´s. Any good suggestions? I heard Avantone mixcubes would be good for checking how it sounds like car stereos or radio. My only concern is that they are very small speakers. are they loud enough? My other option would be some crappy studio monitors like prodipe pro 8´s, which are huge monitors and i think they are totally different sounding than my genelecs.

Just use whatever you have. Your living room stereo, your iPod headphones, your own car.. etc.

The about hype mix cubes is a bit of a myth.

They basically sound like ty TV speakers, so all your really doing is just checking how terrible it will sound on a tv. I've used them just at the end of a score mix to check the mix doesn't completely suck on a crap TV but other than that they're really not that useful. You won't suddenly hear something on them that you wouldn't hear on your gene's.

There's little to no use for them for EDM IMO unless your specifically producing for commercials or TV placement.

Listen to Alanzo - the best to reference on are the most common systems people actually listen on, so ipod headphones, your average car system, your home hifi and maybe some small PC speakers.

Thanks guys, got me thinking that maybe it is just waste of money. I havent seen any edm producer use them anyway. My main point was having two speakers sets side by side so i dont have to leave my room everytime i make little change to the mix. Because as much as i love my genelecs they tend to make my mixes sound too bright on my car stereo. And it takes so much time to burn it to cd everytime.. i need usb player. Maybe i just buy new hifi system with usb slot or just some ugly looking pc speakers:nervous:.....or cheap krk´s:)

First thing I would do is check that your car system is not too bright by itself. Get your favorite, well produced commercial CD's and check them on your car. If they sound bright as well then there's obviously an issue with your car system and you have to take that into account when referencing your car.

If they don't sound bright then get round the back of your monitors and check those dip switches, because you may have them set wrong or the room/listening position is making them dull, resulting in you compensating and mixing too bright.

It will take a bit of trial and error to get it right but the 8040's are great monitors and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to produce a mix that translates well on them.

Yeah done that all...thats why i was asking about mixcubes because i can tell the difference in other music and my mixes in my car so well. But not so well with my genelecs. And i have read other forums as well that genelecs make everything sound good. Thats the problem.
I always use reference music when listening my mixes. I just need one pair of crappy speakers to doublecheck them.

Really, I didn't know the 8040 suffered from that, but in fairness I've only worked on the couple of times.

New hifi speakers aren't going to help much as they are designed to make everything sound nice, so I'd get down to your local salvation army or charity store and pick up a beaten up pair of hifi speakers, just make sure they are full range not tiny 3 inch cones etc.

The only other thing you can do is use the dip switches on the Gene's to drop the bass and mid, so they are a little bright, which should translate to you working harder to get the balance right and make them dull so they don't sound as good.

other than that, the advice is going to be to get new monitors.
