Being honest (in most situations) is just a lot easier. It requires less effort, less maintenance, and doesn't have any deleterious side-effects (assuming one employs tact :p ).

One of my roommates last year was a compulsive liar and we didn't really realize it until after like 4 months of living with him. After it was "uncovered" no one could trust anything he said, and most of us just believed 90% of what he told us originally had been fabricated.
He lost a lot of friends in the process.

i've met many compulsive liars over the years and the one pervading feeling that i got from knowing all of them was pity. pity that they had to go to such lengths, unbelievable lengths in many instances, for the sake of getting acceptance or acknowledgement from others.
