Advice and criticism for a new producer

Hello tranceaddict forums,

I have been a long time trance lover but have only recently started to produce for myself. I've just finished a rough mix of my first track and I was hoping you kind gentlemen could provide me with some constructive criticism and guidance. I'm sure there is a lot of work I can do with the EQ and I feel that my bass is a bit flat. Any comments on my track and what you think I should work on be great. Here it is: http://soundcloud.com/prophecydown/...-freestyle-demo

Thanks.

not bad for a frist track. Not much point in criticizing anything as it is your first attempt. Try another one and keep learning.

Blows my first track out of the water. Keep making music.

My first advice would be to solo the kick and bass and try to get them to sit as good as possible by using EQ to (mostly) cut frequencies (also try to aim for as low a combined peak level as possible). You're attempting to put two instruments in the same frequency space and have failed miserably. Try cutting the bass around 60 Hz, or try 73 Hz to target D2. Other frequency areas you might consider reducing are 147 Hz (D3) or around 100 Hz where the bass is muddying a lot of the mix. You'll probably also have to turn the bass down as it's overpowering the kick.

Once you've got that down, remove the ugly mastering effects you currently have and reduce the master volume so the mix peaks no more than 3 dB below clipping. You might be surprised you hear a lot more then and what mix adjustments you need to make. EQ is your best friend to combining all the instruments into one happy mix. Of course this takes time, but I highly recommend you keep the master channel free and the volume at a low to medium level so you can monitor things accurately.

Thanks so much for the kind feedback. I'll have too keep working on it, try to get my EQing down. As for effects on the master track, while I was working on this track I read somewhere (I think something off the master tutorial list) that you should have high knee compression on your master track, which I tried and liked. Should I be able to achieve the same kind of loudness with just good eq and levels in my mix? Thanks again for listening to my stuff.

Actually, no. Compression and EQ on individual tracks is fine and I keep a limiter, to take care of odd peaks while authoring a song, on my master channel, but a mixdown shouldn't have any mastering EQ, compression, or limiting and should be mixed as close to 0db as one can get without lowering the master volume.
