WHAT THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ADAM VAUGHAN
Mike, here is a potential opportunity to shed light on how Vaughan wields his power in the riding, even against a landmark and staple in the music industry in Toronto for over 50 years-The Silver Dollar Room.
FACTS
In March of 2008, Vaughan expressed publicly his commitment to close a legally operating business in his riding, completely based on unfounded allegations and innuendo. The business had operated for 13 years, but he decided it was his right to close it down. He engaged political, enforcement, licensing, and media support to attempt to shut the business down permanently.
His resolve was so intense, that he appears to have gone outside his mandate to represent the people and businesses in Trinity/Spadina, and with tools only available to politicians who are tempted to abuse their powers, acted in a manner that if successful, would certainly injure an unaffected and unrelated business, The Silver Dollar Room by opposing a minor patio variance it had applied for. And the fact is the Silver Dollar had been operating the rear patio for 7 years previously without single liquor or by law violation. Yet, notwithstanding that the denial of the application would harm the owner/patrons of SDR, he asked the City to oppose the request, solely on the basis that there would be a small benefit to the targeted business he was trying to force to close.
Vaughan went to the city and requested the motion be denied. Upon SDR appealing the denial, he asked the city to pay for legal costs and expert witnesses to defend the action at an OMB hearing, again solely on the claim that it would benefit another business, and had nothing to do with the positive contribution of the SDR and the value it had in the community not to mention its legal right to the application and its satisfying the conditions necessary for the variance to be approved.
The OMB found in favor of the Silver Dollar Room after a 3 day hearing. Vaughan’s actions cost the taxpayers of Toronto in excess of $50,000.00 but the real costs, were to SDR whose appeal cost over $60,000.00 for something as simple as a tarp over the patio to keep their customers protected from inclement weather. And to show how government works, although SDR won the case, it is now almost 18 months later and SDR is still awaiting approval from the city, and its legal costs and supporting costs continue to escalate.
Vaughan requested from the city valuable tax payer money to oppose the SDR. Money that could have gone to fight guns on the street, affordable housing, healthcare, violence against women and children, etc..Instead, he chose to waste tax payers money.
He did it, because he could. And that is wrong. Change is needed. Change is needed now.

Business owners now have the right to vote in city elections even if they dont live in the city or ward that their business is in. If the business owner's name is not on the lease, they can ask their insurance company for a letter stating that they are the owner (in cases of numbered companies etc).
THIS IS CRUCIAL!
Get out and vote for Mike Yen if you are in Trinity Spadina! |

| I don't like Vaughan either. He's the type who thinks he knows what's good for everybody else. However, to unseat a known, high profile political entity you need more than the angle that he's against nightlife and uses public funds to fight it. If Yen's strategists are worth anything they would be finding more wedge issues that will drive voters out en masse ACROSS ALL DEMOGRAPHICS. It's my belief most people will be going to the polls to vote for a new mayor, and choosing their local councillor will be an afterthought. In these cases name recognition always wins. :( |

I agree and he does have more than that angle for sure. However for tranceaddict, this is what ive presented to start with seeing as its most relevant for a clubbing site.
There are a lot of angry voters who dont like vaughan in ward 20 so if there is a name they can recognize that is in opposition, there is a good chance he can be unseated :) |

A 'vote for change' type election often includes the councillors as well. Let's hope it does for Vaughan anyhow! |

Another email i have received:
| quote: | I've had complaints from various people that opponents are going around spreading lies about our candidates, some of them vicious. Other reports say that signs have been stolen, business are being intimidated, promised made that no one can fulfill. Adam Vaughan downtown has been especially bad, also attacking Rob Ford with a vengeance.
We don't want to start fighting back dirty, but must get out there to counter the message. Make more calls because even the incumbents can't reach everyone. The more people you reach the better.
We find that in ward 43, Ainslie's libellous remarks have had little impact on voters. Many voters can see right through their lies.
But what do you do when a truck shows up on a main street and puts large election signs on every property without permission???

New By-Laws passed by councillor ‘anti-fun’ Adam Vaughan, have put at risk all the things that we enjoy….we need change at city hall.
The people of Toronto are calling for change. Mike Yen represents real change in Ward 20. Mike Yen will help bring accountability, responsibility and accessibility to city hall. We need to support our community and local businesses. Small local businesses are a cornerstone of our unique communities in Ward 20 like Chinatown, Kensington Market, Harbourfront and the Entertainment District.
Our current city councillor claims to represent change, yet over the last 4 years, he has ignored the needs of our ward. His voting record reads like a horror story and he is the poster-boy for wasteful spending.
Toronto’s government has grown bloated and wasteful. Instead of managing effectively Politicians have raised your taxes. It’s time to stop the gravy train that provides luxuries and perks to our current councillor and rich sole-sourced contracts to his friends.
It’s time to refocus city government on doing its job efficiently and effectively while respecting the taxpayers of Trinity-Spadina.
Every year city hall spends more money than it earns. Instead of managing effectively, city hall with the help of our current councillor, just raises our taxes. It’s just not fair to force you to cut back on your essentials so our current councillor and his politician friends can enjoy their perks.
You are the taxpayer, you are the boss. Community members of Ward 20 please rise up to help replace our current self-serving councillor (Adam Vaughan) who is the very definition of waste at city hall.
