So where do we start? Can you guys give us a brief introduction
about how the infamous duo of Matt Tolfrey and Inxec (aka Chris
Sylvester) came about?
MATT
Chris used to work with one of my friends Lee Spicknell as Sound
Alliance, and they had some success with releases on Distinctive and
Reniassance back in the day. I actually worked with Chris’s brother
Craig on the Horn/Acix release on Crosstown Rebels, so I have always
had the Sylvester’s. Chris and I decided to get in the studio
together after talking about it for a while, and after a few sessions
we have never looked back.
First off I’m assuming you guys must have been traveling all
over the place this summer, what would be the most memorable gig
that you guys played at over the past couple of months?
CHRIS
Ibiza was ace, as always ! Detroit as been my personal highlight of
the year getting to play the underground stage for some odd reason,
but cant complain was NEXT LEVEL! Also closing room one at Fabric
with Matt was really special, getting to play those odd but amazing
things normally reserved to the rights of Craig Richards etc.
MATT
Playing at Old Miami during DEMF was amazing, as was Glastonbury,
Panorama Bar, and my many gigs at Fabric. I have had a great year
so far and touring USA and Canada again will top it off nicely.
So Matt, I understand you’ve been to Montreal before, you played
Igloofest alongside Guy Gerber; are you excited to be back in Montreal
and what are your thoughts about Stereo? I’m sure you have heard quite
a few things about the club.
MATT
Montreal was great last time, but was very very very cold. I have
heard a lot about the sound at Stereo, and after some modifications to
the club since I was last there, I am looking forward to getting stuck
in there!!!
So this tour has been named the Leftroom Sessions and from what
a lot of people know, Leftroom started off as a label, which focused
mainly on minimal tech house with work from artist such as Mark
Ashken, Shadi Megallaa, and Montreal’s very own Pheek, Alexi Delano
and off course yourself. What current direction have you taken the
Leftroom imprint? With the knowledge you have of the scene and sounds
evolving over the past few years, what can fans expect from the label?
MATT
I have always signed and put out music on the label that I am
currently playing, so as you can imagine over time your tastes do
change. We still have the same ethos of putting out slightly left
of centre dance music, whether it is house, tech house, deep house,
techno, breakbeat, dub-step, etc etc etc.
Inxec, people really started taking notice to what you were
doing as producer last year when both you and Matt released your
house gem ‘Just Can’t Take It’ on Cocoon Recordings, and then
following through with some amazing releases on labels such as
Culprit, ViVA, Murmur, and Zoo:technique. What can we expect from
you in the near future, and where do you think you would see yourself
as a producer with the ever evolving scene?
CHRIS
I’ve just finished off an EP for Cityfox which will include a Dyed
Soundorom remix, so that’s sounding very special! This is kinda going
back, well meeting half way with the old Inxec sound but trying to use
some of the housey melodic elements I dabble with in the house aspects
of my music. Kinda answers both questions really. I think we all kinda
move with the time with exceptions to this rule of course. Otherwise
its hard to soldier on!
So you guys will be playing at Stereo together for the first
time. Matt, you have visited the club, what were your thoughts on
that, and are you guys excited to be playing alongside Joel Mull?
CHRIS
I'm always excited. Except when they put repeats of Friends on TV,
it's hard to get excited at that isn’t it? Joel mull is ace, for a
drumcode guy he kinda flies a different flag to what you might expect
picking on some styles of music that float my boat very much.
MATT
Can’t wait to hear some of our own tunes through the system, and I am
buzzing to be playing alongside Joel. He blew my mind during WMC a
few years ago, and I like his take on techno.
Which artists are really inspiring you guys at the moment with
the music you are producing and playing. Who do you find has stood
out and given you a moment of “Wow, this is incredible!”?
CHRIS
Nico Jaar
MATT
Visionquest, Lazaro Casanova and Julien Perez
Can you say a few words to your fans in Montreal?
CHRIS
Terrapin casserole. Hi. Pastel statues.
P.s I am currently running a fever of 104.
MATT
Let’s not lose my jacket this visit!!!
And if we can turn the temperature up a bit, let’s do it. |
