Officially yes, but only a small minority actually speaks it.

And now, for some reason, everyone's whining their asses off because it's mandatory. As a Swedish-speaking Finn, I can't help but wonder, why? What is so horrible about learning a third language, and espescially Swedish? What about obligatory religion, music, art etc? Why is no one whining about those?

Back on topic: Swedish is the easiest (unless you go to Skåne), Norwegian is a little harder but not impossible, Danish is quite hard to understand.

You don't think obligatory religion gets any criticism??

Sure, but I still believe obligatory Swedish is getting a lot more discussion at the time. Either that, or I haven't paid attention to the religion discussions.

Am I the only person who doesn't think Scarlett Johansson is any more attractive than an average blonde?

Probably because, range wise, it makes more sense to learn Dutch than Swedish... and Dutch is spoken only by some 20 million people in very specific regions of the world. Given how learning a language is often a laborious task, you might expect the government to make mandatory the study of a language which is either massively present in global politics or widely used in your country.

French, German, Mandarin, and Spanish are much better candidates for a mandatory 3rd language, I reckon.

No, I agree with you.

Because Sweden owned Finland back in the days. And of course, Finns don't want that in their face.

The other reason is just a practical one - Swedish isn't nearly as widely spoken as the government thinks. It'd make much more sense to learn a language one could use outside of Scandinavia.

Yea, Swedish in Finland is a bad-idea. Totally meaningless unless you want to understand the intricate lyrics of Kent -.-
