My monitor speaker frequency range is 40-40000hz
its very difficult to monitor the sub bass. most often it sounds so low in the studio monitor, but it sounds so muddy and TOO MUCH sub bass on the other speaker that has a subwoofer.
my question is, do i need additional subwoofer in the studio? are the greatest DJ have subwoofer in the studio?
thanks |

There are pros and cons to having a sub in the studio, many of them well documented in this forum previously
Do you have any bass trapping in your room? |

no, just wall. lol
i mean, im using the sub bass only for the final mix and mastering, so basically i can switch off/on.

| if you have too much bass outside your room, you have standing waves and need to do some bass trapping |

| My woofer has a gain knob but one thing it doesn't have and I wish it did was a delay knob. I had to experiment with a few positions until I found a position that worked. Woofers can be tricky but I like them. I like turning off my speakers and just listening to the sub bass. |

| you could filter out anything below 40Hz. its whats done in clubs anyway and those freqs has no function at all. |

this
not much point in having those frequencies either since the majority of speakers can't reproduce them anyways |

I dunno if you need one - i dont monitor with a sub but i always check my mixes on one. If its possible you should try and add some bass traps to your room, makes a big difference in monitoring bass. |

thats right, mastering cuts are usually made in order to get rid of everything below 30hz, sometimes they go even higher..
its nice to have a sub-woofer and hear all that bottom, but practically they are of no use.
also, if the music is meant to be heard in headphones (on relatively low volumes), those frequencies are usually preserved, if its something like psy trance or club music (amplified and loud), they must be reduced in order not to damage the P.A. speakers, thats all.. unless there is a cross over.. in this case, all the bottom is being sent to a dedicated sub woofer that does the job.
either way, if your mastering your own work, always cut 30-40 hz, depending on the key. refer to frequency chart. if your on C, then make a cut 32.703 (or 33hz for sake of simplicity) cheers! |

| Anyone who cuts everything below 40 Hz is a noob. Sorry, but it had to be said. We can hear (and certainly feel) right down to 20 Hz. Placing a high-pass filter at 40 Hz will mean 40 Hz will be reduced by 3 dB! Sub-sonics are a good thing if they're kept at the right level so they don't dominate the bass, but provide enough support to the mix. |

yeah i wouldnt cut at 40hz, sure you might not hear that sub but you will certainly feel it, im sure most good club systems will play down to that range
i have an eq8 set to 30hz (with a q of about 0.6) on my master, seems to do the job |
