Mastering radio shows/mixes

Hey guys,
Question about mastering and compression. I remember reading on here before that the likes of Markus and Armin run huge radio compressors on their GDJB and ASOT shows respectively. Does anyone know what kinds of compressors they use? I have a radio show that airs on a university radio station and I'd really like to work on the mastering. Right now I'm using a preset on Garageband after mixing on Ableton. It sounds decent but I'd like to improve the quality, especially since we broadcast over 64kbps.
The DAWs I own are Logic express and Ableton Live LE (or intro 8). I know Logic has a template for Mastering, but I'm trying to move away from presets and I want to learn how to actually compress the sound. So far I've tried working with the attack and release and usually it can sound ok, but sometimes the kick drum gets a bit of a popping sound, which isn't really pleasant at a loud volume. Any tips? Thoughts?
Some of you may think this should go in the producer's thread, but I'd probably get shot there for asking such a basic compression question lol.
Thanks a bunch! |

You can't do too much considering that each of the tracks you're mixing have already been individually mastered. Your best bet is to make sure that you don't clip and get a clean sound out of your mixer when you record your mix. Then if you want to, add some light compression. Don't go crazy with it. You shouldn't worry about it too much if you're broadcasting at 64kbps, you can only do so much when the stream quality is so low. |

thanks! what do you mean by don't clip though? i'm also mixing the radio show on ableton, so nothing is really being recorded. |

alot of people use (or atleast before) alesis 3630 because its cheap and decent. but the ******s use it the wrong way so their radioshows sounds like crap. you can get mine for 70USD, i dont use it as it sucks. ud be better of using some software maximizer only. |

I that case, just use ableton's compressor. Don't go overboard with it. You just want to use it lightly. |

Just because it's a simple question doesn't mean it shouldn't go where you'll get the best answers.
I've copied it over in case any of the production boys want to chime in. :) |

lol yup. He is in this constant flux of change where he never gets anything done ever. Definitely the resident eccentric.
You can automate the mixing so that there are no weird change in rms, You can also apply your own aesthetic multi-band limiting to give your set its own EQ template if you will but I considering you are new to producing, just stick to volume automation. |

:wtf: ing Christ. :wtf: I thought who the is this guy but he knew too much (including TA colloquialisms).
Pretty ing sad I recognised him by the compressor he doesn't use. |

i don't know why I am so fond. I think it is because he has treated me like and I guess I love his nordic viking humour. |
