house/trance kicks (pg. 2)

Its about as self explanatory as the word "gunshot". You want a gunshot noise? Shoot a gun.
You want a kick drum noise? Kick a drum.

The most important thing I can tell you is if you want a loud/deep/trancy type kick like tiesto you must wear boots and not sneakers. Golf cleets sometimes tear the drum open so don't do that or you will have to buy a new drum like me... although cleets are usually good for hard trance. Hard trance usually requires thicker/harder drum membranes, hence "hard" trance. Like my cock.. but music.

Apparantly you can make neat fx using your ass too.

I bet this could be applied to the most epic bass kick. jump into the air and land on your ass. I bet it would come out soft and round, with lots of air moving through it, like any good kick.

BS aside, recording tech books illustrate how to record a proper kick sample using a treated studio and proper mic placement. Picking one of these up, if you plan on making your own, would be a good first step.

If you aren't doing that, then search the internet for samples. Google and youtube are you friends.

Samples are for cheaters! Come on guys, stop trolling him.

All you need is a kick drum, a mic (pref condenser) and something to record it onto, but i guess you have that sorted out already.

Does that come in a plug-in now? I always thought you needed a DSP card...

dissonance8, I got some great replies to a similar question here: http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...1&forumid=48&s=

It's not exactly the same, it's a recreation from a site called synth school but I think it sounds very good. It can make some pretty fat kicks. http://www.synthschool.com/downloads.html

It's called ''Adern Kick Me Too''

i've used the "perfect kick" page on the master tutorial list here on TA, and it works pretty well. I use logic - messing around with attack, release, and EQ can usually make a kick big and warm. try adding a bass amplifier on it too, or for some hi/lo-pass filters to drown out the lower frequencies as you wish.

another tip i picked up off CM - a very basic one is having a three-layered kick. have a top kick that is thin and has it's mids up; have a thick body kick, and add a harsh closed hi-hat, very low in volume. all three give a very nice trance kick - wide, but sharp. these may be very noob tips, but then again - i am a noob.

Yeah, that worked well for me in the beginning as well. But then I found myself worrying too much about layering instead of just finding the right kick in the first place.

These days I hardly ever layer different kicks over each other. If I need more thump I just clone the kick and use a LP filter to only bring out the lows, or the opposite for a bit of click.

Also dont forget that for every sample in a layer, the amplification increases. Two samples = twice the amplitude, thats why it sounds louder.
