Here's an excellent 1 hour lecture by Steven Pinker. He covers a bunch of topics related to language and human behavior. The first 20-25 minutes are a bit dry, but I the second half is pretty damn fascinating..focusing on how people can intentionally (and unintentionally) alter relationships with others through word choice. He explains how there can be a high price to pay (either legal or emotional) from poor communication in a single instance..and gives a good explanation for why innuendos and intentionally "blurred" communication are sometimes necessary to maintain stable relationships.
It's interesting to hear a scientific explanation for the behaviors you've instinctively recognized throughout your life but never analyzed on a deeper level. Give it a listen when you find time.

Yet we let them vote.

this is pretty good
i think the scope is much broader even than you've indicated in the thread title. I think one of the deepest things he says is early on when he notes that a language is a foundation for a conception of time and space.
Some people might even say that language and time/space are inseparable.

I haven't had the time to listen to Pinker, but language and time-space ARE inseparable. You can't have language in a void.
