This has been the hardest part of finishing the songs for the last few months.
Got any tips? How do you decide the song titles? |

I try to base the track titles on the mood of the tracks. For me the track titles have to mean something, the title and the track have to represent each other.
I also often have the titles ready way before I even start on the tracks - for example right now I have a list of about ten track titles and an album title even though none of them exist yet. |

| usually just go on my gut instinct, sometimes random, sometimes stupid and sometimes on the mood or overall feeling of the track. |

I'm terrible at song titles. Fortunately for me, I hardly ever have to come up with a title - I let the singers/lyricists figure that out. ;)
The few instrumental dance tracks that I've worked on were collaborations, so I let the other guy(s) figure that out. |

Typically name the sucker once it's done... And yeah it most likely relates to the mood of the track or whatever name it inspired outta me.
Only tried naming one out of pure randomness...and even then it's kinda related.
I suppose to add insight :
Track 1 - Blue Twilight - Reminds me of the evenings in colorado where just after sunset, everything is this royal blue, moons out, stars are out and it's quite pleasant.
Track 2 - Summer Snow - Was actually based on my ventures in Keystone colorado, and I chose the synths to best emulate rushing down a ski-slope in the warm spring air, crashing through snowdrifts and winding up chest deep in powder.
Track 3 - Of love and Desire - Seemed very emotional and full of conflict, the 2 synths go back and forth intimately and a dilemma ensues between them.
Track 4 - City of Light - Absolutely 100% made to reflect my drive into both Denver and Boulder. Starts out at night with a very crisp progression into the city. I imagine the lights growing brighter and brighter until I reach the destination where I'm enveloped in it, and then it abruptly ends when I arrive.
Track 5 - Bon Noir - Reminded me of a very sad goodbye, where it's prolongued intentionally at the end.
Track 6 - Trundlethump - This one was named first...and I suppose it's semi-related in the klutsy way the track starts up, and the emphasis on the kick and pulse throughout.
Also have tracks named Yarr, A balar, Analogous, Seaside Afternoon, I'm yob, DubNbass which are all a little more self explanatory
And the little track title at the front is to keep tabs on my progression...Track 1 being my first production of 2010.
If I were to make an album, I probably would go with that bland naming scheme of Track1, Track2, Track3, and then have the actual song titles hidden in the file itself. (-edit- the reason being actually what mrbojangles has just said below me :)) |

Lately I have been attracted to giving them abstract names, because then all the connotation and imagery will come from the listener's perception of the music, rather than the title.
On the other hand, if I made an album, I might give them evocative names that tied them to each other in some way. |

My track titles often includes titles that are according to the mood of the track, and somewhat related, some kind of intrigue (for example Arnej- They need us attracted a lot of attention because people asked... who need us?) and sometimes an element of joke.
I list here the titles, some of them are really amateur stems so don't bother looking for them if that is your intention.
Boston. Simply because it's the nickname of my cousin and i said i would make him a track for his birthday.
Now i know. Was just a realization that i was starting to know some features of the daw. Still is crap.
Requiem at Dawn. My first serious production still unfinished but surprisingly people liked it. The title is inspired by Mozart's requiem and the dawn signature is because i made this in the laptop in my villages house who has a beatiful landscape, and i usually produced at dawn, real good inspiration and adds some epicness to the track.
Soon but not yet. This is what i said, a criptic name, referring to my goals and how i slowly reach them. Summerish balearic house.
Haunted. Most suprising track, i was in a depressing mood when i started this, smoking a lot... sad after having a bad month and i printed my feelings on the track, is a scary house track and the name fits perfectly to my mood and the track itself.
Cataclysm. Last track, it's an epic uplifting track and the title is mostly freak, i was choosing the name when show that a World of warcraft video was the most seen on the day and it's name was "Cataclysm" i instantly felt that the name fits the track.
And this are my very few originals and their story. |

Mine mean all.
I look around me and pick the first thing that springs to mind that doesn't sound stupid.
I obviously missed that last part when creating 'The Primate Army' |

LOL. Medical terms?
I can imagine the young producers scouring PubMed as we speak...
Maybe my next tune will be "Akylosing Spondylitis" or "Chiari Malformation."
"Hey man, did you hear DJ Cardiologist's new tune, 'Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy?'" |
