NuFunk.ca, the Nu Jazz Festival and The Main Ingredient are excited and honoured to be bringing one of the world’s true Nu Jazz artform masters, Mark De Clive-Lowe, back to Toronto for the first time since his 2006 Beats & Breaks Culture set At Harbourfront. This time, de Clive-Lowe features “The Underground Queen of R&B and Soul” Sy Smith.
It’s all happening Thursday November 11th at Revival Bar (783 College St.). Doors are at 9:00 pm. Advance tickets are $15 online at TicketWeb.ca or at Rotate This, Soundscapes (572 College St.) & Play De Record (357 Yonge St.). Joining our special guests will be Melbourne’s hottest nu jazz producer Sunny Albeau and the much-loved T.O. DJ duo of Jason Palma & General Eclectic.

This show is part of the Toronto Nu Jazz Festival, which for its 3rd Annual edition is presenting its most exciting and star-filled lineup ever! Other confirmed artsts this year include DJ Shadow, Tortured Soul, Aloe Blacc, Rich Medina, The Souljazz Orchestra, and many others taking the stage at in the city's most happening spaces; presented in partnership with other leading promoters like Embrace, Union Events, and other friends dedicated to bringing the nu sounds of today to Toronto.

Artist Bios:

Mark DeClive-Lowe
Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) is a New Zealander-Japanese musician and producer now based in L.A. after the last decade in the UK. He's a devastating live performer creating studio production on stage from scratch using drum machines, keyboards and effects - live remixes created on stage for each and every gig. As well as performances at clubs, festivals and parties worldwide, he's on over 250 releases for Masters At Work Records, Verve, Impulse and collaborating with as diverse a range of artists as Jody Watley, Sheila E (Prince), Omar, Pino Palladino (D'Angelo/The Who), Leon Ware (Marvin Gaye/Michael Jackson), Dame Shirley Bassey, Sandra St Victor (The Family Stand/Chaka Khan) and plenty more, MdCL is one of the most innovative producers and live performers you'll find anywhere.
MdCL's album Tide’s Arising was released worldwide in 2005 on ABB Soul/Antipodean featuring a who's who of guest artists including Bembé Segué, Abdul Shyllon, Pino Palladino [D'Angelo's Soultronics/The Who], Capitol A [The Roots/Jazzanova] and more. Immediately a new millennium classic, Tide's Arising was one of the standout albums of 2005 topping critics lists worldwide. Tide's Arising live shows have been performed in the UK, Europe, Japan, NZ, Australia and USA. 2007 saw MdCL release the Japan-only album Journey 2 The Light also launching the Freedom School record label. Featuring Bembé Segué, Sammy Figueroa [Miles Davis], Jason Yarde [Jack DeJohnette] and Richard Spaven [Guru/Jose James] the album brought the 70s Black Jazz and Strata East sound into the 21st Century with MdCL's most jazz-oriented album yet.

Sy Smith
Often referred to as The Underground Queen of R&B and Soul, Sy Smith rose to fame in the late 1990s when she signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records. Smith released her album Psykosoul in 2000, which spawned the singles "Good N Strong" and "Gladly". In 2005 began her own recording label known as Pysko! Records; and re-issued of her first album entitled, Psykosoul Plus, with the new single "Welcome Back". Later that year, Smith released her second album The Syberspace Social spawning the three new singles "Fa'Sho", "Aquarius Rising", and "No Place Like Love". In 2006, Smith released a single "Fill in the Blanks". While on tour in 2007, Sy Smith released her first live DVD Sy Smith Live: Worship At The Temple, recorded live at Temple Bar in Santa Monica, California. In 2008, Smith released her third studio album, Conflict, with the lead single "Fly Away With Me" along with hree other singles "Conflict", "Spies", and "Ain't Nobody's Bizness".

Sunny Albeau (Melbourne, Australia)
Christian Bernardi, aka Sunny Albeau, is combines keyboards & electronic devices to create cutting-edge dance music on the fly. He has performed in London, Tokyo, New York, San Diego and Wellington. His newest album, 2010’s, The Marlbro Sounds, is an experimental nu-jazz journey through New Zealand’s isolated cluster of islands and sea, The Marlborough Sounds.
Heavily influenced by great filmmakers as well as musicians, his inspirations include Federico Fellini, Luis Bunuel, Jean-Luc Godard, John Coltrane, Jimmy Smith and Henry Mancini.
Jason Palma:
A well known figure in the Toronto scene, Palma brings over 15 years experience deejaying a wide variety of music; from latin, soul, classic house, funk, hip hop to brasilian samba & afrobeat. As one of the first architects of Toronto's early Acid Jazz, Deep House and Funk scenes, his skill at mixing records that would appear to be 'unmixable' has placed him in constant demand over the course of his career, while also making him one of the most beloved DJs in the T-dot!
John Kong:
Building on his experience as a well-known jazz, funk, hip-hop and soul-inspired electronic music DJ and tastemaker, John founded Do Right! Music in 2002. In that time, John has singlehandedly developed the label’s international stature through high-quality Canadian and international releases from a varying genres. Recently, his management savvy has helped innovative Canadian artists such as two-time Juno Award nominee Elizabeth Shepherd and Maylee Todd grow their profiles to impressive new heights.
General Eclectic:
A man with no limit of passion and knowledge when it comes to nearly all types of music. General Eclectic displays his skills on the decks with heart and intensity each and every Foot Prints party. His meticulous attention to detail when mixing records and his instinctive ability to effortlessly flow between genres has won him a large following of music heads and dancefloor junkies. Having been known to play just about anything in his sets, his style is hard to categorize but impossible to refuse.
