Nowadays, more like a psy dj, and now and then a bit of prog and tech surprise.
p.s. Most CL clips are psy, the one above is as well. I'd like to be convinced otherwise, but it simply isnt the fact, not anymore |
i think i disagree. the set posted above has a lot of psy influenced tracks esp in 2nd half, but they aren't pure psy. there are like two tracks I'd call psy in the set, but for example the track that's around 49min mark. That's just some pure awesome trance.
don't wrap your head around that today's so called trance trance is ASOT/Anjuna only. CL and J00f are examples of how to be a trance DJ without resorting to ASOT/Anjuna style. these guys play trance closer to it's original form than most so called trance DJs nowadays |

I think you mean Armada not Anjuna. Set tracklisting posted on first page is 10 tracks and 7 fall under psy description in any psy trance shop. I am not sure what you mean by pure psy, but imo in 2010 there is little pure anything. Psy comes in a dozen diff styles to say the least. I would call pure psy, something that was closest to the stuff in the early 90's, which takes a lot of influence from acid house, which you dont hear much these days, cause its just corny, but some Neo Goa style tracks are solid. What would be Your pure psy; is it fullon, progressive goa, or dark, or a bunch of other styles?
I realize that CL is a club DJ, however, he plays mostly brandname psy whenever I see him, the only time he didnt, when he opened for JOOF at Guv a couple of years ago, and I can see why he made that decision, which I agree with. Long gone are the days when CL played techy stuff for most part and squeezed in approximately 20% psy, now the numbers have flipped in the last 10 years. I realize that fullon or dark psy is not the best sound for your average clubber, so CL does not cater that much, JOOF is the only famous club DJ I can think of, who plays closest to psy set, and he didnt start out that way in the early 90's, he made the transition around 2000, when he started to play a lot more psy, mainly I think, cause the new psy sounds started to emerge, which were more clubber friendly. For those, who call themselves psy purists, JOOF is a joke. I on the other hand, prefer JOOF sound to any other, and I have been listening to same tracks as JOOF would play.
The new psy sound the way I prefer it started to come out around 1999, prior to that there was no such thing as club psy and beats were muffled, which sounded horrible on a bass heavy system. Since 1990, trance has grown from a baby into a monster. I consider JOOF contributed to psy club scene, what Oakenfold and few others did to club uplifting trance sound in 1996-1997, prior to that even Oakenfold played psy in clubs. I have to thank club trance for bringing trance to mainstream level, so people know what trance is, otherwise people would still be asking me if this was some sort of techno, like they did in 1992. I still have cassettes with psy on them, lol, cause in '92 when I bought my first car, I could not dream of a stereo system with a cd player. So I dont think I need an introduction on what is psy and what isnt.
As for a dj resorting to ASOT sound, there is nothing wrong with it, everyone caters to their customers, and play what floats their boat. Everyone realizes ASOT/Armada sound makes more money, and whoever plays it, may actually prefer it over psy. There is very little psy fan base compared to Armin trance sound community, so I hardly think they are resorting, just catering to a more popular scene. As for original trance form vs others, imo its just a matter of preference, and in no way an indicator who is a better dj. I am sure Armin is laughing all the way to the bank, not worried about CL or JOOF playing a more "proper" sound than him. I think everyone can agree that Armin is NOT a "so called dj". It has become popular to crap all over Armin, but in my books, I cant think of anyone, who made more contributions to the trance scene as we know it, and I am not sure he is one of those resorters :) I agree that JOOF plays the sound that has more roots in trance, but imo this does not nullify or belittle other trance styles. Everyone has their preferred sound, and it does not mean that those who love Armin, know nothing about "true" trance, and they should start listening to CL or JOOF cause they play truer trance. If it wasnt for late 90's epic trance, the scene would still be nowhere near the monster it is now. |

| Just enjoy the music he plays. Does it really matter if it is pure psy, not pure psy, half pure psy? It’s not like you will win a trophy for correctly categorizing the music genre or you will be accepted as the cool kid on the block and girls will be all over you. |
