Q & A WITH MISSTRESS BARBARA
So Misstress, you’re no stranger to Montreal. We’ve seen you playing
all over the city in venues such as Piknic, Beach Club, Parking, Zoo
Bizzare, Olympic Stadium, including appearances at afterhours such as
Stereo, Sona, and Aria.
What is it about Montreal that brings you such inspiration?
The crowd is amazing!
Very loving and when I play for them it really feels like home.
You’ve played an integral role in Montreal’s scene for quite some
time now. Your fans here absolutely adore you! While playing to your
Montreal fans, what would be your fondest onstage memories?
Well thank you for the compliment! My most amazing memories are all
shared between my first of few 9 hour birthday sets at Sona, then at
Aria, and pretty much every year I play at Piknic Electronik! It's
all been pure magic!
Your Iturnem imprint is not as active as it used to be. Is there
any particular reason for that, or do you plan on just focusing the
label for your own music rather than releasing music of others? And
have you discovered any local producers who you’d like to see
breakthrough into the EDM scene?
One of the main reasons is that a lot of distributors went bankrupt
in the past few years and I was tired of looking for a new one that I
probably could not even trust. It's not their fault; it's the digital
business that created this monster. Sure I could release only digital
stuff right now, but it's not as exciting as when I was releasing
vinyl. Although my latest album I'M NO HUMAN just came out digitally
worldwide on Iturnem, and for that it is very useful having your own
label! I wouldn't mind also releasing other artists music, but at the
moment it’s very difficult to find the time and energy with my
touring schedule to look for good artists and run a label properly
the way it should be. Nowadays if you don't have a label that
releases tons of material it's pretty much useless to run one.
Finally, most of the demos I get these days don't really excite me.
And I don't want to release average music just to keep the label's
catalogue running.
What prompted you to step back from techno to focus more on your
band, Misstress Barbara with Girls On A Ducati? Can you brief us on
what the band has been doing recently?
I did not really step away from techno. When I DJ I still play very
techno. But aside from that I really needed to explore new horizons
and be able to do something different and produce different music
too. I also wanted to have the challenge to perform this music in a
different way other than just with decks and a mixer. I love being a
LIVE artist very much, performing with musicians, and I am only
planning to do more of it and become better at it day by day. As for
the DJing, it's still there and it will always have a very special
place in my heart, but with this constant need to challenge myself, I
just didn't see how I could evolve in something I have already done
inside and out.
The last time we heard you play in an afterhours setting in
Montreal was at Aria. November 5th will be the first event of our 11
Year Anniversary, are you excited to return to Stereo’s infamous
soundsystem once again? Do you have any words for your fans?
I am very excited! Stereo is a place where I haven't played much.
Maybe only once if I remember correctly. And it's a very established
club that has survived among this tough business for so many years,
so it's exciting to be able to go back there and please my fans who
have been waiting for an afterhours set of mine for so many years
now! So I'm looking forward to November 5th and I hope the entire
city will be in there! Thanks for having me on such an important date
for the club! I'll make sure to tear the place apart as a birthday gift!! LOL |
