they both have the same (v)synth, and there's probably a preset pad that's basically this, and they both got caught using presets.

"caught" using presets? lol

I'd say that's a fair enough term for it. Using presets is just lazy. Would YOU buy a synth (software or hardware) and just use the presets? Not me.

I always thought this was very frowned upon among producers but I've recently realized how shockingly common it really is.

Like I said - Lazy :p
Edit: Seriously though, half the point of having a synth is to tweak around with it for cool sounds. Why would people not do that?

I like to make my own sounds. However, sometimes it just so happens that I find a preset that appeals to me. Naturally, I make as many modifications as I see necessary so the sound fits better into the tune... but often the sound I want is exactly the sound I found. Why refrain from using a sound you like simply because it's a preset? That's like not using a concept because it isn't a neologism you coined :p

It doesn't make them money quickly enough.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using presets as such, but when you base your entire track on a very recognizable patch/loop/sample then it's just lazy.
DaRoZa
it copies much more than one vst's sound from ribage...

So when you just started making music you already knew all there was to know about synthesis, and you just sat down and designed every little sound by yourself?
There's nothing wrong with using presets. The whole "presets are bad"-thing is just something some producers made up so they could feel 1337ist.
I normaly start out with a preset, and then tweak it to how i want it to sound. The reason for this is that I have spent most of my time producing on getting solid mixdowns, and not learning granular/fractal/whatever synthesis.
Solid mixdown > Homemade presets that sounds exactly like the stuff that comes with the synth/can be bought

When I first started, I refused to use presets. I thought it was lame, so I busted my ass practicing and learning everything I could about synthesis. I got to a level where I could make pretty much any sound I want a few years ago. Now, however, I will use a preset here and there if it sits well in the track. There's nothing wrong with that, just don't base an entire track around it, like Mr. Mystery was saying.
Same goes for loops......
