Though I like the BBC very much, specially its documentaries, their science journalists are appallingly terrible. Almost every single time it says something about language/linguistics, I cringe.
They employ some of the best journalists in the world?
I've always found their science stuff to be top notch. Obviously it isn't going to be the white papers of some new research, but why would it be when it's a news website?

It boggles the mind: they're one of the best news agencies in the world, yet...

how do you measure temperatures around 4500 mill degrees anyway?
It's kind of a fuzzy concept to assign a temperature to something like this. Temperature is just molecular kinetic energy. In lay terms, that just implies that in a warm room the air molecules are flying around faster than they are in a cool room (or in a solid, they are in a sense vibrating, but still bound to each other). To say that two ions smashing together in a vacuum have a temperature of x degrees is kind of arbitrary, it's really more of a statement of the energy involved in the collision, which is easily measured.

I don't understand the cartoon. Got a simpler version?

Oh please do tell us of a global news network that is more accurate. In fact tell me a national news network that is more accurate. Yes, they've ed up certain things by not fact checking but the desk on that cartoon should read fox news, who blatently do make up whatever they want and present it as fact.
I also know it's wrong because BBC don't allow gingers on TV.

That's ed up. I know about a good one from a Bolivian news channel that showed still frames from the first episode of LOST passing them as genuine pictures recovered from a camera onboard the Air France flight that crashed over the Atlantic Ocean.

When it comes to science, going straight to the source and reading the stuff (for example) by the Nature Publishing Group is always the safest bet.
And, regarding ordinary news, I don't remember the last time the Guardian let me down.

OK now that that is all done where is the SLHC going to go?

I hear you but if we all just went straight to the source in the first place we wouldn't need news outlets or journlists (not that any of us really have the time or the resources to go to the original source anyway).
And yes, the Guardian is a very good newspaper with good journalism, if a little left biased (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but it's not what i would call a global, or even national news network as such. I don't think it even has offices outside the UK anymore since guardian USA was abandoned a few years back.
